Job description

Position Title: Grades 512 Principal
Reports To: Superintendent
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

The Grades 512 Principal serves as the instructional and operational leader for two school buildings serving approximately 400 students. This position is responsible for fostering a positive, safe, and academically rigorous learning environment for middle and high school students. The Principal provides leadership in curriculum, instruction, student support, staff supervision, and building operations while working collaboratively with a Fiscal Secretary to manage school-level budgets and resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Leadership

  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of a rigorous, standards-aligned instructional program for grades 512.
  • Promote effective instructional practices through regular classroom observations, feedback, and professional development.
  • Analyze student achievement data to guide instructional decisions and improve outcomes for all students.
  • Support implementation of district-adopted curriculum and instructional materials.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and high expectations for staff and students. 

School Culture and Climate

  • Establish and maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive school climate across both buildings.
  • Promote student engagement, attendance, and academic success.
  • Oversee student discipline in alignment with district policies and Oregon law.
  • Support social-emotional learning and student wellness initiatives. 

Staff Supervision and Evaluation

  • Supervise, support, and evaluate certified and classified staff across both buildings.
  • Facilitate professional growth aligned with district goals and educator standards.
  • Recruit, hire, and retain high-quality staff in collaboration with district leadership.
  • Build leadership capacity among staff, including teacher leaders and department heads. 

Operations and Management

  • Oversee daily operations of two school buildings, ensuring efficient and effective use of time and resources.
  • Coordinate schedules, supervision plans, and building procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with district policies, state and federal regulations, and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with maintenance, transportation, and food service departments as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Fiscal Management

  • Work closely with the Fiscal Secretary to develop, monitor, and manage school budgets.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of financial resources in alignment with district priorities.
  • Approve expenditures and oversee purchasing processes.
  • Assist in planning for long-term resource needs. 

Family and Community Engagement

  • Build strong relationships with students, families, and community partners.
  • Communicate effectively and regularly with stakeholders.  
  • Promote community involvement in school programs and activities.
  • Represent the school and district in community settings. 

Collaboration and District Leadership

  • Serve as a member of the district leadership team.
  • Collaborate with other administrators to ensure alignment across grade levels and programs.
  • Support district initiatives, strategic planning, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Participate in required meetings, trainings, and professional development. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Oregon Administrative License or ability to obtain.
  • Master's degree in Educational Leadership or related field.
  • Successful teaching experience, preferably at middle and/or high school levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a school setting.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading multiple buildings or complex school systems.
  • Knowledge of Oregon graduation requirements, assessment systems, and accountability measures.
  • Experience with budget management and school finance.
  • Familiarity with student information systems (e.g., Synergy) and educator evaluation systems (e.g., Frontline/My Professional Growth).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move between buildings and classrooms regularly.  

Ability to supervise student activities indoors and outdoors.
