Job Description:

This position requires an effective team leader to provide leadership and direction for the Production team and maintenance personnel in their efforts to maximize the safe and efficient production of a value-added finished product and smelting operation in a cost-effective manner. The incumbent must be proactive in utilizing the coaching concept toward a self-directed workforce with emphasis on employee involvement and empowerment.

Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge & Education Recommendations:

Qualifications:

  • Computer literate with strong technical knowledge of manufacturing and production processes.
  • Demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in a management-related field preferred; or
  • Equivalent combination of six years of technical and supervisory experience with additional education beyond high school.

Qualifications for this position may be acquired through experience as an hourly employee, technician, or through prior supervisory experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or heavy industry environment. The incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal and team-building skills. This position requires excellent communication and creative problem-solving skills. It also requires a coaching-oriented leadership approach that promotes ownership at the floor level while allowing the team to manage its daily work routines.

This position must be proactive in working with the team to create a vision statement, establish boundaries, serve as a resource for training and development, assist in solving problems encountered by the team, interface with the crew's external environment, communicate pertinent information to and from the crew and management, and administer the Labor Agreement and plant policies.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Learn, accept, and live Century Aluminum’s Safety Mission Statement.
  2. Provide direction for the Production Department team to achieve the most effective and efficient use of available resources while maximizing safety, quality, productivity, cost control, and customer satisfaction.
  3. Train and develop the team to meet the objectives. Assist the team in establishing boundaries with emphasis on meeting and exceeding both internal and external customer expectations.
  4. Provide direction for the team to encourage ownership and accountability at the floor level. Take a proactive role in providing direction for shift craftsmen and operators to increase equipment reliability and operational effectiveness.
  5. Provide direction and coaching to ensure the working environment is clean, organized, and safe at all times. Provide guidance and support to the department’s safety committee to help manage the day-to-day safety, health, and environmental activities of the team.
  6. Develop, train, and guide personnel in safety awareness. Demonstrate through actions and behavior a personal commitment to safety for the crew to follow.
  7. Proactively participate in safety program activities including, but not limited to, accident and incident investigations, formal workplace inspections, crew safety meetings, and meaningful job observations.
  8. Interface with other plant crew leaders and teams to maximize productivity and the delivery of value-added products throughout Century Aluminum.
