What is the difference between Lean Manufacturing Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectLean Manufacturing EngineerManufacturing Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a Lean certification, engineering degreeRequires an engineering degree, often with process or manufacturing focus
Work EnvironmentFocuses on process improvement, waste reduction in manufacturing settingsDesigns and improves manufacturing processes, may oversee production lines
Industry UsageCommon in industries adopting Lean principles like automotive, electronicsWidely used across manufacturing sectors for process development

While both roles work within manufacturing environments, the Lean Manufacturing Engineer specializes in applying Lean principles to optimize processes and eliminate waste. The Manufacturing Engineer focuses on designing and improving manufacturing systems overall. Both roles require engineering backgrounds but differ in their primary focus areas.

What is a lean manufacturing engineer?

A Lean Manufacturing Engineer is a professional who specializes in optimizing manufacturing processes to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and enhance product quality. They use Lean principles and methodologies, such as value stream mapping and continuous improvement, to streamline operations and eliminate non-value-added activities. Their role often involves analyzing workflows, implementing process improvements, training staff, and ensuring that production systems meet both cost and quality objectives. Lean Manufacturing Engineers work closely with teams across the organization to foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lean manufacturing engineer?

To thrive as a Lean Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in industrial or manufacturing engineering, a thorough understanding of lean methodologies, and often a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with Six Sigma, value stream mapping, root cause analysis tools, and ERP or MES systems is typically required, along with certifications like Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help drive process improvements and foster team collaboration. These competencies are vital for reducing waste, optimizing production efficiency, and sustaining continuous improvement initiatives within manufacturing environments.

How does a lean manufacturing engineer typically collaborate with production teams to implement process improvements?

Lean Manufacturing Engineers work closely with production teams by observing workflows, gathering feedback, and facilitating workshops to identify inefficiencies. They often lead cross-functional improvement projects, ensuring that proposed changes are practical and sustainable for operators and supervisors. Regular communication, hands-on training, and follow-up assessments are key parts of this collaboration, helping to foster a culture of continuous improvement and buy-in from all team members.

Position Overview

GTI Fabrication is seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Manufacturing Engineer to lead the design, control, and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes in a modular fabrication environment. This individual contributor role focuses on developing scalable, efficient production methods for custom enclosures, containerized systems, and structural steel weldments. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Lean Manufacturing, and quality systems such as ISO9001.

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will work cross-functionally with Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain to ensure manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance across the product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and optimize manufacturing processes for modular fabricated systems, containerized enclosures, and steel structures.
  • Develop formal manufacturing documentation including process flow diagrams, work instructions, BOMs, routings, CNC programming, and assembly/inspection plans.
  • Use CAD tools (SolidWorks and AutoCAD) to design fixtures, tooling, and work-holding solutions to support scalable production.
  • Translate engineering design requirements into robust and efficient production processes.
  • Lead new product introduction (NPI) efforts from prototype through full-rate production.
  • Apply Lean Manufacturing principles to reduce waste, improve flow, and optimize floor layouts.
  • Integrate automated and digital manufacturing technologies where applicable.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate manufacturability and ensure alignment between engineering intent and production capability.
  • Utilize ERP systems (NetSuite preferred) to manage process documentation and support real-time operations visibility.
  • Maintain compliance with ISO 9001 standards; support internal and external audits.
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective action using tools like FMEA, SPC, and 8D.
  • Mentor technicians and junior engineers in best practices for manufacturing engineering.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
  • 4-7 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, preferably in modular fabrication, defense, energy, or industrial equipment sectors.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD for 3D modeling, 2D drafting, and tolerance analysis.
  • Strong working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems (NetSuite a plus).
  • Demonstrated success in process development, design for manufacturability, and production scaling.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization, modular product platforms, and structural weldments.
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 quality systems and compliance standards.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in containerized HVAC, power distribution, or control system enclosures.
  • Familiarity with CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and industrial coatings.
  • Certification in Lean Six Sigma, PMP, or related process improvement disciplines.
  • Experience with CFD/FEA simulation tools.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a full-time onsite position based in Goodyear, AZ.
  • Work takes place in both office and fabrication floor environments.
  • May require up to 5 % travel to customer sites or GTI facilities.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs. and walk fabrication areas.
