Position Summary

This is the fifth level of the financial analysis classification hierarchy. Progression to this level is typically restricted on the basis of business need. Employees at this level solve complex problems and interpret internal or external business issues and recommend solutions. Incumbents provide leadership (advising and providing direction) to others in financial areas of specialization and may coordinate daily work activities or review the work of other teammates. Employee may also regularly lead projects. Employee works independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations. Incumbent has specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise. This role is responsible for accounting, financial analysis, and reporting support for the Controller's Department. The position requires interaction with various departments and individuals within the organization, strong technical knowledge and research capabilities to ensure compliance with GAAP and FERC. Responsibilities also include leading projects, setting priorities and special projects as assigned.


Perform complex analysis and research ad-hoc requests, develop reporting, and effectively present results for management review and decision making.

Responsibilities
  • Lead accounting staff of 8 (EY resources) and provide support for both the joint owner and transmission billing organization.

  • Support the manager by aiding in running the month-end close process, day-to-day activities and be available for questions from staff.

  • Participate in the annual OATT process, including assisting with the completion of the Formula Rate template and assisting with data requests from customers.

  • Oversee Midwest Joint Accounting and Billing.

  • Assist with the creation of new accounting processes for new joint owner relationships.

  • Assist with the accounting changes that arise from the 1U merger.

  • Preparation and review of monthly journal entries, account reconciliations and analysis, and financial statement analysis.

  • Prepare and review financial schedules, data requests, internal and external reporting, and FERC filings. Prepare and present analysis of financial data for management reporting, including extensive AvB and AvA analysis in support of monthly FRS meetings.

  • Work with internal and external auditors, providing necessary information and answering questions.

  • Coordinate ongoing assessment of the internal control environment including management of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) processes.

  • Maintain good working knowledge of accounting policies and impacts. Lead implementation for impacts of new accounting pronouncements.

Required/Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Other Related Degree

  • Must have 5+ years (8+ desired) of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree

  • Years of prior equivalent work-related experience in lieu of a degree is N/A unless grandfathered in and requires CFO Staff approval.

Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) or

  • Master's degree in Accounting

  • In addition to desired degree, 8 years related work experience

  • CPA

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficient using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, and Power Point

  • Possesses and applies fundamental accounting and finance concepts, practices, and procedures.

  • Experience with financial applications (i.e., PeopleSoft FMIS, Power Plant, etc.) and query tool (Business Objects)

  • Masters in Accounting or MBA

  • CPA, CIA, MBA, CFA or CMA is strongly encouraged for achieving the Lead Analyst or higher position.

  • Strong analytical/problem solving skills and business acumen. Ability to understand business operations and apply business acumen to identify issues and propose innovative solutions.

  • Experience and knowledge of Commodities XL (CXL) system

  • Good knowledge of GAAP accounting and familiarity with FERC Uniform System of Accounts

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and/or in a team environment to provide recommendations when only limited standardization or precedence exists

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills with all levels of the organization

Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
