Job description

Job Summary

VIZ Media, the world leader in English-language versions of manga and anime, is looking for a Copy Editor to join our Editorial team. The Copy Editor is responsible for editing copy that appears in VIZ Media's print and digital publications-including chapters, graphic novels, trade books, novels, catalogs, and promotional materials-for errors of grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, accuracy, and completeness. The Copy Editor implements the guidelines for the overall quality and style standards of VIZ Publishing products.

What you'll do:

  • Copyedit lettered pages of graphic novels, simultaneous serializations, manuscripts, and any other assigned text for accuracy and clarity
  • Proofread mechanicals and layouts of covers and miscellaneous text for graphic novels and other books
  • Proofread bluelines of interior pages and miscellaneous text for graphic novels and other books
  • Check for consistency and integrity of layout elements, including art, logos, ISBNs, and prices
  • Enforce and update in-house style guides, consulting the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Make recommendations to editors and designers to arrive at the best solutions for narrative flow and legibility
  • Autonomously manage workflow and set project priorities, meeting departmental production schedule deadlines while accommodating ad hoc rush projects
  • Work with Copy Chief to identify and address any issues affecting the copyediting and proofreading stages of the Publishing production process
  • Process books for reprinting, coordinating with Production and Publishing Operations staff

The ideal candidate has:

  • 3+ years of copyediting experience, preferably in a publishing environment
  • Excellent English language skills, including knowledge of grammar and style
  • Profession experience with standard style guides such as Chicago Manual of Style
  • Experience creating style sheets
  • Ability to improve copy and maintain continuity in assigned projects
  • Ability to make both business-oriented and creative judgments
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Effective time management
  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Creative Writing, Comparative Literature, Communications, or related fields from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience

Additional preferred skills/knowledge:

  • Knowledge of book publishing, comics, manga, or anime
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat

Work Environment & Schedule

Location: The Copy Editor position is open to candidates local to the San Francisco Bay Area. VIZ Media operates on a hybrid schedule with 1 day of work onsite at our downtown San Francisco office expected weekly.

Schedule: This is a Regular Full-Time position (40 hours per week) with core hours of 10 am to 4 pm with flexibility outside of core hours.

Compensation: $72,000 - $78,000 annually, depending on experience, with additional variable compensation
