Landscape Apprentice information

What is a landscape apprentice?

Landscape Apprentices are entry-level workers who assist experienced landscapers in the planning, installation, and maintenance of outdoor spaces such as gardens, parks, and commercial properties. They learn essential skills on the job, such as planting, irrigation, hardscaping, and the safe use of landscaping tools and machinery. This role is ideal for individuals interested in starting a career in landscaping, as it provides hands-on experience and opportunities to develop technical knowledge under the supervision of skilled professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landscape apprentice?

To thrive as a Landscape Apprentice, you need basic horticultural knowledge, physical stamina, and a willingness to learn, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand tools, power equipment, and basic landscape design software is often expected, along with any relevant safety certifications. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and communication skills help you stand out in this hands-on role. These abilities ensure high-quality work, safety, and smooth collaboration on landscaping projects.

What are some common challenges a landscape apprentice may encounter during their first year on the job?

As a Landscape Apprentice, you may find the physical demands of the job, such as lifting heavy materials and working in various weather conditions, to be challenging at first. Adapting to the fast pace of landscape projects, learning to use specialized tools safely, and understanding plant care requirements are also common hurdles. However, with guidance from experienced landscapers and a willingness to learn, most apprentices quickly build the necessary skills and confidence. Teamwork is crucial, as you'll often collaborate closely with other crew members to complete projects efficiently.

What is the difference between Landscape Apprentice vs Landscape Laborer?

AspectLandscape ApprenticeLandscape Laborer
Required CredentialsMinimal; often on-the-job training, some may have basic certificationsNone typically required
Work EnvironmentSupervised, learning-focused, on-site landscape projectsPhysical, manual labor on landscape sites
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in landscaping companies, nurseries, and garden centersCommon in landscaping and outdoor maintenance firms

In summary, a Landscape Apprentice is a learner gaining skills and knowledge under supervision, often with some certifications, while a Landscape Laborer performs manual outdoor work without formal training. Both roles are essential in landscaping projects, but the Apprentice position emphasizes skill development and training.

How do I find a landscape apprenticeship?

To find a landscape apprenticeship, search for local landscaping companies or nurseries that offer training programs, and inquire about apprenticeship opportunities. Many programs require a high school diploma or equivalent and may include on-the-job training combined with classroom instruction on landscape design, maintenance, and safety protocols.

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour

Job description:

Lead High-Quality Landscape Install Projects With the Equipment to Do It Right

MTH Landscaping, Inc. is growing, and we’re looking for a highly experienced Landscape Install Crew Manager to help lead our installation crews.

This is not a basic labor position. We’re looking for someone who can take ownership of a jobsite, lead a crew, operate equipment, read plans, solve problems, train team members, and help us deliver high-quality work for our clients.

We have a strong team already in place, including apprentices and crew members who are ready to learn. What we need now is another strong field leader who can help us keep growing.

If you’re the person others already look to for direction on the jobsite, we want to talk.

What Makes This Opportunity Different

At MTH, you won’t be asked to produce high-end work with worn-out equipment and no support.

We have a large, modern fleet of trucks and equipment.

We’re building a company where strong field leaders have the equipment, team, and support needed to do great work.

What You’ll Lead

You’ll lead residential and commercial landscape installation projects, including:

  • Paver patios, walkways, and outdoor living spaces
  • Retaining walls
  • Grading and site preparation
  • Plantings and landscape renovations
  • Mulch, seeding, and sod
  • Hardscape and softscape installation projects
  • Equipment-assisted production work

What We’re Looking For

The right person for this role has:

  • 5+ years of experience leading landscape installation crews
  • Hardscape and/or softscape installation experience
  • Skid steer operating experience
  • Excavator operating experience
  • Ability to read plans and help lay out projects
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong communication skills
  • A professional, reliable, team-first attitude
  • Pride in quality work and clean jobsite execution

What You’ll Do

  • Lead a crew on landscape construction projects
  • Organize daily jobsite tasks and production goals
  • Train and mentor apprentices and crew members
  • Operate equipment safely and efficiently
  • Communicate job progress, needs, and issues with management
  • Help ensure projects are completed to MTH Landscaping quality standards
  • Maintain a safe, productive, and professional jobsite

Pay & Benefits

  • $30–$40/hr based on experience
  • Higher starting pay considered for proven crew leaders
  • Overtime opportunities
  • Full-time employment
  • Health insurance contribution
  • IRA retirement plan with company match
  • Paid vacation / paid time off
  • Safety equipment provided
  • Modern trucks and equipment
  • Year-round employment opportunities, including snow work
  • Advancement opportunities as the company grows

This Role Is a Great Fit If You...

  • Want to lead, not just work on a crew
  • Take pride in high-quality landscape installation
  • Know how to keep a crew moving productively
  • Can train younger team members without losing patience
  • Like working with modern equipment
  • Want a long-term opportunity with a growing company
  • Care about doing the job right the first time
