Laborer Pay information

What is the average pay for a laborer?

The average pay for a laborer can vary depending on location, experience, and industry. In the United States, laborers typically earn between $15 and $22 per hour as of 2024. Entry-level positions may start at minimum wage, while experienced laborers or those working in specialized fields can earn higher rates. Pay may also be influenced by union membership, overtime opportunities, and regional demand for labor. Benefits such as health insurance or retirement plans can further affect total compensation.

What are some common challenges laborers face on the job site and how are they typically addressed?

Laborers often encounter physically demanding tasks, exposure to varying weather conditions, and the need to adhere to strict safety protocols. These challenges are typically addressed through comprehensive safety training, the use of protective equipment, and rotating assignments to prevent fatigue. Many employers also foster teamwork and clear communication to ensure everyone understands their responsibilities and can support one another, making the work environment safer and more efficient.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a laborer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Laborer, you need physical stamina, basic math skills, and the ability to follow instructions, which typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, safety equipment, and sometimes OSHA certification is important for operating safely and efficiently. Dependability, teamwork, and a strong work ethic are vital soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualities ensure that laborers can perform physically demanding tasks safely, efficiently, and collaboratively on job sites.

Job description

Installer / Construction Laborer

$21.00–$24.00/hr base + per-job bonus opportunities — our installers average $55,000–$65,000+ per year

TerraFirma has been the Pacific Northwest's trusted name in foundation repair, basement waterproofing, crawl space encapsulation, and concrete repair since 2005. We're locally owned and operated — not a national chain — which means the people making decisions are the same people you'll see in the shop. We don't just fix homes, we protect families, and we're looking for people who take pride in work they can see, touch, and stand behind at the end of every day.

You'll start out working alongside an experienced crew, with all tools, equipment, and training provided.

A REAL CAREER PATH — NOT JUST A JOB

This is where our foremen started. Our structured Production Level 1 Training Program gets you certified and productive fast, and the ladder is real:

Installer → Senior Installer → Foreman → Assistant Production Manager and beyond!

Each step comes with a pay increase, and we promote from within first — our leadership started right where you will. You'll also be paired with a mentor through our FIRM Foundations Mentorship Program from day one.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Perform hands-on labor: digging, backfilling trenches, and job site cleanup
  • Assist with product installations under Foreman direction, following approved methods
  • Load and unload trucks with materials, tools, and equipment
  • Carry and deliver heavy materials (up to 50 lbs) to and from job sites
  • Work in crawlspaces and basements safely, and outdoors in all weather
  • Operate TerraFirma vehicles safely and represent us professionally — our reputation travels with you
  • Show up consistently and reliably — your crew counts on you
WHAT WE ASK
  • Able to lift 50 lbs and perform strenuous labor for extended periods
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces (crawlspaces, basements)
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company vehicle insurance requirements
  • Reliable, safety-minded, and ready to learn — construction experience helps, but we train the right people
PAY & EARNINGS
  • $21.00–$24.00/hr base, plus per-job bonus opportunities
  • Our installers average $55,000–$65,000+ per year with overtime and bonuses
  • Paid travel time — when a job takes you out of town, your drive time is compensated in accordance with applicable state law, and TerraFirma covers your lodging + per diem.

Some projects require out-of-town travel with overnight stays — it's part of the job, and we make sure you're taken care of when you're on the road.

WHAT WE OFFER
  • Clear promotion path with paid training and certifications (Production Level 1 Program)
  • 14 days PTO + 7 paid holidays
  • All tools/equipment provided
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance plans
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan with company match
  • Company-paid Life Insurance and AD Short and Long-Term Disability coverage
  • Paid family & medical leave
  • Wellness programs and a family-oriented culture where you're treated like one of our own
OUR VALUES: F.I.R.M.

At TerraFirma, our values aren't a poster on the wall — they're how we show up every day:

  • Family — We treat our team like family and support each other on and off the job site
  • Integrity — We do the right thing, even when no one is watching
  • Resilience — We push through challenges and come out stronger
  • Mastery — We take pride in our craft and always strive to be better
