Job purpose

The Clinical Laboratory Training Officer is responsible for coordinating, developing, assigning, documenting, and evaluating staff training and competency for laboratory personnel across all locations. This role supports regulatory readiness, quality improvement, policy and procedure development, site audits, and ongoing staff education while maintaining the ability to perform laboratory technical duties as needed.

Essential Job Functions

Training and Competency:

• Complete, coordinate, and document staff training and competency for all laboratory personnel at all locations.
• Develop, evaluate, and modify competency assessments to ensure staff meet laboratory, organizational, and regulatory requirements.
• Assign and track training content through Clearview University and other approved training platforms.
• Serve as MediaLab administrator, including assigning, maintaining, and monitoring training, competency, and continuing education records.

Policy, Procedure, and Quality Support:

• Help develop, evaluate, and modify laboratory policies and procedures.
• Participate in continuous improvement activities by reviewing training processes, competency documentation, and laboratory workflows.
• Support quality assurance and regulatory compliance by ensuring training and competency records are complete, accurate, and current.
• Assist with preparation for inspections, audits, and regulatory reviews related to training and competency.

Site Audits and Laboratory Operations:

• Travel to other locations to complete site audits and review compliance with training, competency, safety, and laboratory procedure requirements.
• Identify training gaps, communicate findings to leadership, and assist with corrective action plans.
• Perform laboratory technologist job functions as needed to support daily operations and maintain technical proficiency.
• Act independently and accept responsibility for following and supporting clinical laboratory policies and procedures.

Communication and Teamwork:

• Maintain positive working relationships with laboratory staff, clinic personnel, management, and leadership across locations.
• Provide clear verbal and written communication regarding training expectations, competency requirements, audit findings, and follow-up needs.
• Answer questions from staff, physicians, nursing personnel, and management regarding laboratory training, competency, and procedure-related topics.
• Promote consistent laboratory practices and support staff development through coaching, education, and follow-up.

Qualifications

• Must demonstrate strong organization, documentation, communication, and follow-up skills.
• Must be willing to adapt to a flexible schedule and work environment, including travel to other locations as needed.

Education/Experience

• Must have Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or other Biological Science and MT/MLS certification from a recognized credentialing agency such as ASCP or AMT.
• Minimum of two years' experience in a clinical laboratory setting required; prior training, competency, quality assurance, or leadership experience preferred.
• Must have basic computer skills and the ability to use laboratory information systems, MediaLab, Clearview University, and related training or documentation platforms.

Working conditions:

This position works in the clinical laboratory of a busy outpatient oncology/hematology clinic and may require travel to multiple laboratory locations. The Clinical Laboratory Training Officer will work closely with coworkers, management, physicians, nursing personnel, and other clinic staff. This position may require the employee to handle bodily fluids and chemicals while performing laboratory duties.

Physical requirements:

This position requires that the employee be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, up to eight hours a day. This position also requires the employee to perform mild physical labor necessary to complete laboratory, training, and audit-related tasks.
