Job Summary
Battelle's Advanced Microsystems Solutions team is seeking a Laboratory Data Processing Technician to support laboratory and microscopy workflows through the processing, organization, and preparation of data generated by advanced characterization tools. The applicant will be a key part of our multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists working on cutting-edge embedded security solutions for microelectronic systems. This position is located in Columbus, OH. Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $50,000-$65,000 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
The technician will work closely with microscopists, engineers, and scientists to process and manage microscopy and materials characterization data using custom software tools and workflows. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to independently operate specialized software after training while also developing requirements for new tool features and improvements. This role is well-suited for candidates with a technical or computational background who enjoy structured tasking and working with scientific data.
Responsibilities
  • Process and organize data generated by microscopy and materials characterization tools, following established workflows and procedures.
  • Operate custom and internal software tools to analyze and prepare data for downstream use by engineers and scientists.
  • Verify data completeness, consistency, and quality prior to handoff or archival.
  • Document processing steps, software usage, and data outputs in accordance with laboratory standards and record-keeping policy.
  • Protect data responsibly with adherence to standard policy and procedures.
  • Maintain orderly data storage, file structures, and metadata using internal systems.
  • Collaborate with microscopists and technical staff to clarify data requirements and resolve processing issues or escalate them appropriately.
  • Support continuous improvement by providing feedback on software usability, efficiency, and clarity.
  • Complete tasking independently once trained, while adhering to well-defined scopes and timelines.

Key Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related technical field, OR equivalent experience with scientific or engineering data.
  • Comfort working with computer-based tools and structured digital workflows.
  • Scientific curiosity and willingness to learn new tools and processes.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow documented procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new software tools and operate them reliably and independently.
  • Knowledge or general familiarity with electronics technology.
  • Basic understanding of data organization, file management, and version control concepts.
  • Must be a sole U.S. Citizen.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoW security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with custom research-focused software tools used in technical or laboratory environments.
  • Programming or scripting experience (academic or practical) in Python, C, C++, or Java.
  • Comfortable with Linux operating system environment
  • Knowledge of electronics technology, including logic functions, Boolean algebra, and transistor structures.
  • Exposure to scientific, imaging, or engineering data (e.g., scanning electron microscope data, GDSII design).
  • Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes and structures.
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort working with multiple datasets or task queues.
  • Interest in supporting scientific research or laboratory operations.
  • Active DoW security clearance
