Job description

Grafton City Hospital is centrally located less than 30 miles from Morgantown, Bridgeport, and Fairmont, WV.
POSITION SUMMARY
  • Under the direct supervisor of the Sleep Lab Coordinator, the Polysomnography Technician provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including all forms of respiratory care including aerosol treatments, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, and assists in emergency procedures, polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services and patient care and education. In addition, will perform all department functions including: Patient Scheduling & Pre-authorizations; PSG testing; CPAP Titrations; MSLT studies; MWT studies; Day Studies; Split Night studies; Scoring; and assisting with department quality assurance & performance improvement programs.
  • Essential job functions include: Cardiopulmonary Functions : Gather and analyze patient information, including patient history, physical information, medications and physician order(s). Administers aerosol treatment, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry and peak flow assessment in a timely manner, and according to established procedures. Administers appropriate oxygen therapy, according to written order(s) and makes adjustment recommendations to ensure adequate oxygenation. Demonstrates operating knowledge in adult ventilation. Interprets ABGs, pulse ox and other lab results. Performs chest auscultation and records results. Responds to and is responsible for ventilation in emergency situations requiring manual resuscitation. Assists in transporting patients requiring ventilator support within the facility.
  • Sleep Lab functions: Explain procedures and orientate patients to the sleep center. Prepare and calibrate equipment. Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted standards, making adjustments if necessary to ensure proper signal, following procedural protocols. Perform polysomnographic data acquisition, while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure free signals. Document observations. Implement appropriate interventions.
  • Administrative job duties include answering the telephone.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Certifications as described above.

EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum 1-year of experience working in a Sleep Lab, Sleep Clinic, and/or Sleep Center.
  • Preferred: Two years of experience working in a Sleep Lab, Sleep Clinic, and/or Sleep Center.
  • Incumbent will be able to demonstrate working knowledge of all equipment and provide preventative maintenance, disinfection, sterilization and assembly of equipment effectively.
  • Strong customer focus and the ability to display respect create a positive impression. Patient registration and/or healthcare experience are preferred.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A Sleep Lab Technologist will be currently certified or eligible for certification as a certified or registered technologist in sleep disorders such as a RST, RPSGT, and/or SDS.
Required:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • A Polysomnographic Technologist will be currently certified or eligible for certification as a certified or registered technologist in sleep disorders such as a RST, RPSGT, and/or SDS;.

and
  • Certification by a nationally recognized certification board and holds either the Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential.

or
  • Ability to become certified within 120 days of hire.

Preferred:
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Licensed by the West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care with a temporary license with continued employment based upon successfully passing the next available national exam is required.

EXPERIENCE
Required:
  • Minimum 1-year of experience working in a Sleep Lab, Sleep Clinic, and/or Sleep Center.

Preferred:
  • Two years of experience working in a Sleep Lab, Sleep Clinic, and/or Sleep Center.

Other requirements / Certifications / Licensing
  • If ACLS certification is not current, you must obtain ACLS certification within 6 months of hire.
