What is a lab support technician?

Lab Support Technicians are professionals who assist in the daily operations of laboratories by preparing equipment, maintaining supplies, and supporting scientists and researchers with experiments. They are responsible for cleaning and sterilizing lab instruments, ordering inventory, and ensuring that safety protocols are followed. Lab Support Technicians may also help with basic data entry, sample preparation, and routine laboratory tests, making them essential to the smooth functioning of research and clinical labs.

What does a lab support technician do?

A lab support technician performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks at a clinical laboratory or medical facility. As a lab support technician, your duties involve collecting samples, inspecting incoming specimens for accuracy or quality, and tracking the receipt of samples. You may also maintain computer system records, manage the hardware and equipment used in the laboratory, and write reports and summaries. Lab support technicians can work in a number of fields, and their responsibilities vary depending on the industry and work environment. To begin a career as a lab support technician, you typically need an associate degree, preferably in laboratory technology, and relevant experience. Although certification is not required, becoming a certified lab technician may give you a competitive edge. Additional qualifications include technical, analytical, and organizational skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lab support technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lab Support Technician, you need a solid understanding of laboratory procedures, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols, usually backed by an associate degree in a science-related field. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), standard lab instruments, and safety certification (such as OSHA) is commonly required. Attention to detail, organization, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help manage tasks and support team operations. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate lab results, safe working conditions, and efficient lab functioning.

What are some typical challenges a lab support technician might face in their daily work?

Lab Support Technicians often encounter challenges such as managing multiple tasks simultaneously, including equipment maintenance, preparing lab materials, and ensuring proper safety protocols are followed. They may also need to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions quickly to minimize disruptions to experiments. Adapting to changing priorities and collaborating with researchers or scientists to support various projects are common aspects of the role. Staying organized and maintaining clear communication with the team are essential for overcoming these challenges effectively.

Job description

Job Title: Lab Technician 2
Location: Longmont, CO

Description:
We are looking for a Lab Technician to support SSD hardware bring-up, firmware validation readiness, and lab operations within the US FPT lab team. In this role, you will help enable successful SSD validation programs by ensuring test systems are properly configured, hardware is available and tracked, issues are resolved quickly, and lab activities stay aligned with project schedules.
This is a hands-on technical role in a fast-paced engineering lab environment. You will work closely with firmware, validation, platform, facilities, IT/infrastructure, and operations teams to support new hardware bring-up, test execution, system debug, inventory management, and continuous improvement of lab processes.
This role requires onsite lab support and direct interaction with SSD hardware, test systems, lab inventory, and shipping/receiving activities. Remote or hybrid work is not supported for this role due to the nature of lab operations and hardware readiness requirements.
The ideal candidate enjoys solving technical problems, working directly with hardware, documenting results clearly, and contributing to a reliable and scalable lab environment.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
โ€ข Support SSD hardware bring-up, configuration, validation readiness, and ongoing maintenance for project-specific platforms.
โ€ข Build, configure, modify, and maintain NVMe/PCIe SSD test systems, hosts, debug systems, and supporting lab infrastructure.
โ€ข Execute defined test plans, manual procedures, pre-flight checks, and system validation steps with strong attention to detail.
โ€ข Troubleshoot hardware, software, firmware, connectivity, power, and system-level setup issues to restore lab readiness.
โ€ข Capture and summarize diagnostic data, logs, failure observations, and debug details to support engineering analysis.
โ€ข Manage lab inventory, asset tracking, hardware reuse, check-in/check-out processes, and project-specific hardware availability.
โ€ข Coordinate shipping, receiving, internal movement, and tracking of SSD and non-SSD hardware components.
โ€ข Collaborate with engineering, validation, facilities, IT, and operations teams to support lab activities and project schedules.
โ€ข Support lab planning activities related to rack allocation, space, power, equipment readiness, and future scalability.
โ€ข Communicate task status, risks, blockers, and dependencies clearly and proactively.
โ€ข Participate in team meetings and cross-functional discussions to provide updates on assigned activities.
โ€ข Identify and implement efficiency improvements through automation, scripting, documentation, and repeatable lab processes.
โ€ข Support lab repair workflows, issue tracking, and process improvements for recurring lab activities.

Technical Requirements:
โ€ข Hands-on experience building, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining PC/server-based hardware systems.
โ€ข Experience with NVMe/PCIe SSD hardware, storage platforms, or system-level test environments.
โ€ข Ability to execute test plans, follow written procedures, and summarize results accurately.
โ€ข Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, firmware, connectivity, and system setup issues.
โ€ข Familiarity with Unix/Linux command-line environments.
โ€ข Basic scripting experience in Shell or Python is preferred.
โ€ข Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for inventory tracking, reporting, and data organization.
โ€ข Strong written and verbal communication skills.
โ€ข Ability to work independently using technical documentation and defined procedures.
โ€ข Comfortable performing hands-on, repetitive, detail-oriented lab activities with consistency and quality.
โ€ข Prior experience in an SSD, storage, firmware validation, hardware validation, or engineering lab environment is strongly preferred.
โ€ข Experience with automation, diagnostic tools, log collection, or analyzer tools is a plus.
