What are some common challenges faced during a lab relocation, and how can team members best prepare for them?

Lab relocation projects often present challenges such as coordinating the safe transport of sensitive equipment, minimizing downtime, and ensuring regulatory compliance for hazardous materials. Team members can best prepare by engaging in thorough planning, creating detailed inventory lists, and communicating closely with vendors and stakeholders. Regular team meetings and contingency planning help address unforeseen issues, while cross-functional collaboration ensures a smoother transition and maintains the integrity of research activities.

What are lab relocation services?

Lab relocation services involve the planning, coordination, and physical moving of laboratory equipment, samples, and materials from one location to another. These services are essential to ensure sensitive instruments and hazardous materials are safely transported and that research continuity is maintained. Professional lab relocation providers handle everything from packing and labeling to regulatory compliance and reinstallation at the new site. Their expertise minimizes downtime and prevents damage or loss during the move.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Lab Relocation, and why are they important?

To thrive in Lab Relocation, you need strong project management skills, knowledge of laboratory procedures, and familiarity with safety regulations, often supported by experience in lab operations or facility management. Proficiency with inventory management software, equipment calibration tools, and regulatory compliance systems is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities are vital soft skills for coordinating teams and ensuring a smooth transition. These skills are crucial for maintaining scientific integrity, minimizing downtime, and ensuring safety and compliance during complex lab moves.

Job description

Lab/Field Technicians perform lab/field work and provide support for a variety of projects, with an expected ratio of 70% lab/field and 30% office work during a typical week.

The Lab/Field Technician position is an entry-level position supporting a variety of environmental services for private and public sector clients. Lab/Field Technicians must communicate effectively with a team of professionals across the environmental and engineering sectors during project planning and construction phases. Lab/Field Technicians assist Biologists and Senior Scientists by executing fieldwork and supporting general operations.

Lab/Field Technicians are expected to have excellent field data collection and data entry skills (i.e., attention to detail), be self-motivated and conscientious with a strong work ethic, and have the ability to meet deliverable deadlines within the expected timeframes. This position includes preparing Environmental Assessment (EA) reports for work in utility corridors and supporting permitting and compliance projects associated with that work. Depending on the project location, field work could include surveys for: gopher tortoises, burrowing owls, nesting birds, wetlands, protected trees, or seagrass and oysters. Other tasks are assigned as needed to support new projects and individual professional development. Lab/Field Technicians must be able to follow complex instructions and communicate candidly and professionally with others.

The ideal candidate possesses the following knowledge, skills, and qualifications:

  • Strong familiarity with Florida's ecosystems and plants (upland, wetland, and scrub habitats).
  • Comfortable and experienced in conducting wildlife surveys (gopher tortoises, avian species, and other state/federal protected wildlife) sometimes under adverse field conditions (e.g., heat, inclement weather, biting insects, etc).
  • Experience using GPS units and ESRI GIS Products (ArcPro, FieldMaps, Survey123)
  • Comfortable and experienced with operating 4X4 off-road vehicles and ATVs.
  • Experience conducting field sampling in support of water quality monitoring projects.
  • (Plus) Experience with technical writing.
  • (Plus) Experience with environmental resource permitting (local, state, and/or federal level).
  • (Plus) NPDES Stormwater Management Inspector Certification.
  • (Plus) Boat and/or heavy equipment operation experience.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting as well as independently with limited direct oversight.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deliverable deadlines within the expected timeframes.
  • Excellent communication and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work remotely on occasion (typically 1-2 weeks max with sufficient notice).
  • Must possess clean driving records.

General position duties and responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) the following activities:

  • Conduct environmental assessments and wildlife surveys in the field.
  • Support gopher tortoise relocation field activities.
  • Conduct water quality field sampling in support of water quality monitoring projects.
  • Accurately perform data collection, entry, verification, and management in accordance with Standard Operations Procedures (SOPs).
  • Support the preparation of technical reports and other project-specific deliverables within predefined due dates.
  • Successfully manage multiple assignments and tasks concurrently.
  • Responsible for the preparation, ordering, and maintenance of field equipment.
  • May serve on ad-hoc committees at EAI (Ecological Associates, Inc).
  • May serve as coordinator of specialized tasks at EAI.
  • May participate in mentorship program.

Position requirements include a B.S. degree in the environmental/biological sciences with at least two years of related professional experience.

The Field Technician position is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position. Starting pay range for this position is anticipated to be $21.00 to $24.00 per hour dependent upon experience and qualifications. This position reports daily from our Jensen Beach office.

This position is eligible for the following benefits: Paid Time Off (PTO), medical insurance (75% employer-paid employee coverage), retirement plan with company match, bonus opportunities, professional development support, and more.
