Job description

Laboratory Technician

Performs standard laboratory testing for a specialty surgical hospital in order to aid in the treatment of patients and improve patient outcomes. Work is performed with a considerable degree of independence in the application of clinical laboratory knowledge and techniques, and requires judgments in monitoring test procedures, quality control, and test interpretation. Work is performed under the supervision of the Laboratory Administrative Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs laboratory testing with CLIA waived, moderate, and high complexity designations.
  • Shows proficiency in venipuncture and finger sticks.
  • Results out laboratory testing in a timely manner.
  • Assists with interpretation of laboratory results when needed.
  • Assists with laboratory inventory including ordering of supplies if needed.
  • Rotates on-call every 2-3 weeks as schedule requires.
  • Reports critical lab values to the appropriate staff in a timely manner.
  • Teaches routine procedures and orients staff to laboratory services
  • Knowledgeable of criteria of collection and processing of send out labs.
  • Performs proficiency testing, monitors records, and maintains quality control.
  • Assists with and reports infection control as needed.
  • Maintains and calibrates lab equipment; cleans lab according to OSHA and CLIA regulations.
  • Provides test results to requesting clinicians.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve common issues with laboratory analyzers and equipment.
  • Reports any complex issues/problems to the laboratory manager/director.
  • Recognizes age specific lab values. Incorporates age specific parameters into interpretation of lab values.
  • Knowledge of the variety of laboratory procedures applicable to the area(s) of work.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology.
  • Thorough knowledge of exposure control and universal precautions.
  • Wears PPE as indicated.
  • Knowledge of the basic physiological processes being monitored and how medical laboratory science is applied.
  • Ability to make accurate observations and written reports of test results.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff and clients.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification Requirements

(CR.1c) As part of the Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification, at a minimum, the Program direct-care staff, must have one (1) hour of education specific to the Program scope, initially, and at least annually thereafter.

(CR.1e) As part of the Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification, staff possess adaptability to processes as related to up to date best practices, collaboration between departments, compliance with protocols/processes, communication, cooperation and exceptional customer service.

Within 90 days of hire or, if currently employed, within 90 days of signing the job description, must adhere to:

  • Orientation of Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification
  • In compliance with the Program education requirements
  • Completed department specific competencies
Regulatory Requirements
  • Must have a current license issued by the state of Louisiana as a medical technologist, medical laboratory technician, or equivalent.
  • Must be qualified under general supervisor standard 493.1461 or 493.1462; (CFR)
  • Must have graduated from an accredited medical laboratory or clinical laboratory training program with an associate's or bachelor's degree.
  • Have at least 1 year of clinical laboratory training or experience in high complexity testing;
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
Skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires some repetitive motion, standing, walking, bending, kneeling and stooping all day. The employee must frequently lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
