JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the Lab Techs are responsible for inputting, weighing, and processing client's incoming samples.
Work conditions and physical requirements include: light to medium work (must be able to lift and carry 25 lbs for 25 feet) involving chemical hazards.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit for long periods of time; while having to weigh, reach with hands and arms, type, use hands finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, controls; talk, hear, and smell. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, or crawl. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to work in hot conditions 90+ degrees.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Comply with the OHS Act and Regulations, BV Group Policy and Procedures, High Grade Management System Policies and Procedures and ISO standards applicable to the Lab Tech Position.
  • Act in a safe and professional manner and wear appropriate attire including the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Able to use laboratory balances, moisture machines, drying ovens, loi ovens, annealing ovens, and other lab equipment
  • Carry out analytical procedures in accordance with documented SOPs and other work instructions.
  • Ensure proper functioning of Analytical operations by:
  • Calibration of balances and other equipment as needed
  • Able to use SORBY system and has basic computer skills including Microsoft program knowledge.
  • Calibrating, operating and analyzing samples by various analytical techniques
  • Stocking of the lab with supplies (lead, acid, paper, borax, silica, etc).
  • Updating order list when supplies are low.
  • Making and refilling reagents for use in lab includes but not limited to: 25% HNO3, 50%, HNO3, 10% HCL, DIWATER, sodium thiosulfate, copper chloride.
  • Taking care of acid waste (dumping and pumping)
  • Weighing and digesting samples for various techniques such as but not limited to gravimetric, precipitations, aqua regia, salt fusions, and other methods.
  • Knowing fundamental lab tasks including but not limited to: Sample weigh and prep, moisture, LOI, PH analysis, roasting, pre-igniting, metal rolling, tubing, Ytt spiking, Sample storage, sample returns, density calculations, basic dilutions, salt fusions, filtering, precipitations, disposal of acid waste, inventory, and XRF.
  • Organization of samples. (Proper placement/storage of Client Samples.
  • Being able to wash dishes properly with the right procedure to ensure clean glassware.
  • Follow strict procedures
  • Practicing good housekeeping. (Cleaning of stations before and after use, general lab cleaning, etc).
  • Communicate general laboratory issues to the Laboratory Manager as appropriate.
  • Report any deviation(s) from documented procedures to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Report any unsafe condition(s) observed in the department to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Report any nonconforming work, customer samples or test data to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management

Education:
High School diploma or degree preferred.
