Job Description Summary:
Responsible for the supervision of section personnel and the accurate and efficient performance of work assignments in a specific section of the laboratory, including quality control and instrument maintenance. Must possess license as a technologist and qualify for State of Tennessee supervisor license. Under the direct supervision of the clinical section manager/director or if in a community hospital laboratory, that Chief Executive Officer's designee. Responsible for the supervision of a specific section of the laboratory 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Incumbents are subject to overtime and call back by the department as designated by the hospital.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Reviews results of all tests reported in a laboratory section and evaluates for validity and completeness.
  • Reviews quality control and maintenance logs and provides assistance in resolving problems of instrument malfunction and unacceptable quality control findings.
  • Orders reagents and supplies for laboratory section.
  • Prepares personnel shift and work assignment schedule for laboratory section; authorizes overtime and time off.
  • Prepares and maintains current procedure manuals for the laboratory section and maintains a current department policy manual.
  • Interviews prospective employees, trains new employees, evaluates work performance, and recommends promotion or dismissal of those personnel under his or her direct supervision; participates in department supervisory meetings.
  • Evaluates, recommends, and establishes new procedures, reagents, and equipment for laboratory section.
  • Participates in preparation of department personnel and equipment budgets.
  • Consults with technical representatives about problems with reagents, supplies, or instruments, and data on new products.
  • Provides orientation to all testing personnel and annually evaluation and documentation of all testing personnel's work performance.
  • Obtains specimens from patients for laboratory procedures. Develops and maintains a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
  • RCRA Hazardous Waste Management for Generators Certification will be provided to staff assigned to handle hazardous waste (alcohols, xylene, and stain) to the hazardous waste drum collection area on the dock.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed. Assess competency of each person performing patient testing to perform his/her assigned duties.
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from a NACCLS approved program or equivalent or TN State approved alternate route and licensure as a Medical Laboratory Supervisor-General by the Tennessee Laboratory Board.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
  • CLS I or higher (ASCP) or equivalent
  • Current license as Laboratory Supervisor (General or Specialty) by the State of Tennessee.
  • Maintain State of TN licensure by completing education as required by State of not less than 12 CE hours annually.
EXPERIENCE:
  • General knowledge of laboratory procedures, specific knowledge of section procedures, and demonstrated ability to perform in a supervisory capacity as normally acquired through 3- 6 years of medical laboratory experience as a medical technologist.
