Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for the performance of a variety of testing to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease under the professional direction of a qualified Medical Technologist or other certified Laboratory Scientist as defined by appropriate regulations(s). He/she must have an understanding of the technical aspect of all diagnostic procedures being performed, including the steps to take for unacceptable test/quality control performance and results. The MLT has direct patient contact if performing phlebotomy, pediatric sweat chloride testing, bone marrow assistance and/or therapeutic phlebotomy procedures. The scope of care may include the testing performed on neonate, child, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patients.
The MLT supports the Laboratory's Performance Improvement Programs to ensure services exceed quality and customer service standards. The responsibility of supporting a self-directed laboratory team concept is demonstrated by having a positive attitude, willing to give and accept constructive criticism, always maintaining a high-quality work standard and willing to accept other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by the Health Education and Welfare Academic and Sciences Program prior to 1980 or the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as of 1980; or
Meet the CLIA Standard; Testing personnel qualification 42CFR493.1423 for moderate complexity testing and 42CFR493.1489 for high complexity testing.
Certification by the ASCP, AMT, or other organization deemed comparable is not required but preferred.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
A State of Tennessee License is not required.
