Job description

BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Referral Testing Specialist acts as a resource regarding referral tests for other departments. This position uses multiple communication tools to respond to requests for problem resolution, result inquiry, and specimen requirements for referral testing, emphasizing teamwork and focusing on customer service.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Supervisory Responsibilities: NO
Number of Direct Reports: N/A
Minimum Education: Associates degree from an accredited college offering a NCCLS approved Medical Laboratory Technician program or completion of a clinical lab training program
Degree: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
License/Certification Required: Certification as an MLT or MLS by ASCP, AMT or AAB
Minimum Work Experience: 2 years related laboratory experience preferred
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Basic knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, equipment, and techniques of medical technology.
  • Skill in both verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to learn and work in multiple LIS and software systems.
  • Able to multitask, handle stress appropriately, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Works well with others and consistently displays a courteous, professional attitude in all situations.
  • Maintains Packing and Shipping Dangerous Goods certification

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains advanced knowledge of specimen requirements for both in-house and referred testing.
  • Assists in retrieving and sorting specimens to be transported to a referral laboratory
  • Packages and ships referral specimens in accordance with all applicable federal and state transportation guidelines
  • Recognizes sample quality, quantity, and transportation temperature requirements for referred testing.
  • Responsible for resolving complex referral testing issues, including missing or lost specimen investigations.
  • Assists with monitoring insurance and billing information for accuracy and determine if additional information is required to prevent inaccurate billing.
  • Uses prioritization and multitasking skills to assure all daily assignments are completed within accepted time frames.
  • Assists in the training of new employees and aids in the development and validation of send out procedures.
  • Works closely with IT to update the laboratory dictionary when new test builds are required.
  • Updates the laboratory dictionary with referral lab test code changes.
  • Works closely with NICU and the State of Tennessee Newborn Screening Program to ensure accurate and timely testing.
  • Reconciles outstanding referral lab logs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS-Note: Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
