What is an L5?

An L5 position is a mid-level role in many tech companies, such as Google or Amazon, that typically corresponds to a Senior Software Engineer or similar title. Employees at the L5 level are expected to demonstrate strong technical skills, take on significant project responsibilities, and often mentor junior team members. This level is considered a key step towards higher leadership or specialist roles, and the expectations for impact and autonomy are substantially higher than at lower levels.

What do L5 professionals do?

At the L5 level, professionals are often entrusted with leading mid- to large-scale projects and are expected to demonstrate technical expertise and initiative. Daily responsibilities commonly include designing solutions, writing and reviewing code, mentoring junior team members, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as product management, design, and quality assurance. L5s play a key role in architectural decisions and are often involved in setting technical direction for their teams. This level is also a critical stepping stone toward more senior leadership or specialized technical roles, offering opportunities for career advancement and broader impact within the organization.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an L5?

To thrive as an L5 Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, usually backed by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development frameworks, version control systems like Git, and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP is typically required, along with possible certifications in these technologies. Excellent communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills that help in collaborating across teams and mentoring junior engineers. These competencies are essential for delivering high-quality software solutions, driving project success, and contributing positively to team dynamics.

Own planning and delivery of large-scale data center builds from preconstruction through commissioning (Levels 1–5) and turnover. Lead cost, schedule, risk, and stakeholder alignment across design, supply chain, field execution, and integrated systems testing (IST).

Key Responsibilities

- Lead end-to-end delivery: precon, procurement, construction, commissioning (L1–L5), IST, and closeout.
 - Build and manage detailed P6/MS Project schedules with critical path, float, and key milestones (equipment release, FAT, SAT, energization, MOPs, IST).
 - Drive long‑lead procurement (switchgear, UPS, generators, chillers, CRAH/CRAC) and vendor coordination; track submittals, shop drawings, and factory acceptance testing.
 - Implement rigorous change control, RFI/CO workflows, document management, and earned value/cost forecasting.
 - Coordinate with design, commissioning providers, OEMs, BMS/EPMS integrators, and client operations to ensure Tier target and redundancy intents (N, N+1, 2N/2N+1) are met.
 - Plan and supervise method-of-procedure (MOP), standard operating procedure (SOP), and emergency operating procedure (EOP) activities in collaboration with Superintendents and client operations.
 - Enforce QA/QC and testing plans; verify results against TIA-942 design intent and ASHRAE TC 9.9 thermal guidelines.
 - Prepare transparent reports and dashboards on cost, risk, safety, quality, commissioning status, and readiness for IT load.
 - Lead risk registers and mitigation plans for supply chain, permitting, energization, and commissioning bottlenecks.
 - Support environmental, health, and safety programs on live/energized sites in partnership with field leadership.

Qualifications

Required:
 - 7+ years of construction project management with 3+ years in data centers/mission-critical.
 - Demonstrated delivery of $20M+ projects on fast-track schedules.
 - Strong knowledge of MEP systems, critical power/cooling, BMS/EPMS, redundancy topologies (N, N+1, 2N).
 - Proven commissioning exposure (L1–L5) and IST planning/execution.
 - Proficiency with Procore, P6 or MS Project, and cost management tools.
 - Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and negotiation skills.

Preferred:
 - Familiarity with Uptime Institute Tier concepts and TIA‑942 resiliency ratings; working knowledge of ASHRAE TC 9.9 guidelines.
 - Experience with phased turnover and live environment upgrades.
 - PMP/CCM or equivalent credential.
