Kennel Technicians are animal care professionals responsible for the daily care and well-being of animals in boarding facilities, veterinary clinics, or animal shelters. Their duties typically include feeding, bathing, exercising, cleaning kennels, monitoring animal health, and assisting veterinarians or other staff as needed. They play a crucial role in maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for animals. Kennel Technicians must be compassionate, attentive, and comfortable working with different types of animals. This entry-level position can also serve as a stepping stone to more advanced roles in animal care.

What does a kennel technician do?

A kennel technician, also known as a kennel assistant or kennel tech, oversees the animals and kennels at a pet boarding facility or veterinary office. As a kennel technician, your duties include cleaning and maintaining the kennels, giving pets their food and medication, walking dogs, and providing grooming and bathing services. You may work with veterinarians and veterinary technicians, who oversee the animal’s health while they are boarding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a kennel technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Kennel Technician, you need foundational knowledge of animal care, basic handling skills, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. What are common challenges faced by kennel technicians, and how can they be addressed?

Kennel Technicians often encounter challenges such as managing high workloads during peak boarding times, handling animals with varying temperaments, and maintaining strict cleanliness standards.
