What is a Kaufman?

In the German-speaking world, a 'Kaufman' (or correctly spelled 'Kaufmann') is a term for a merchant or a businessperson involved in commerce, trade, or sales. This role typically includes responsibilities like purchasing, selling, negotiating contracts, and managing business operations. Kaufleute (plural) can work in various industries, including retail, wholesale, import/export, and corporate sectors. The profession often requires formal vocational training, known as 'Ausbildung,' in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. The role is essential to the functioning of the economy as Kaufleute help connect producers with consumers and manage essential business transactions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Kaufman?

To thrive as a Kaufmann, you need strong commercial knowledge, financial acumen, and typically a completed vocational training or degree in business or commerce. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, accounting software, and relevant certifications such as IHK qualifications are often required. Excellent organizational skills, effective communication, and customer orientation set top performers apart. These skills ensure efficient business operations, compliance, and strong client relationships in a competitive commercial environment.
