Job description

Overview
Knowledge Services is currently seeking a Senior Systems Administrator for a contract to hire role with the State of Indiana Public Retirement System INPRS.
  • Applicants must be able and willing to convert to a full-time employee without the need for current or future sponsorship of a work visa.

Work Location: 100% onsite in Downtown Indianapolis for initial training, then will move to a hybrid work model
Work Hours: Monday-Friday 8AM-4:30PM
Responsibilities
Senior Systems Administrator responsibilities include:
• The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for the ongoing operations and maintenance of an IaaS hosted environment leveraging both enterprise-level Linux and Microsoft Windows Server operating systems ensuring server and application availability.
• This role requires critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills with the ability to develop and document processes based on best practices for operating system security, configuration management, and disaster recovery.
• Candidate must demonstrate INPRS culture and values: Model of Integrity, Team Player, Candid, Continuous Learner, Diligent, Trust, Constructive Conflict, Commitment, and Accountability.
• Responsible for the administration and support of the computing and VMware environment specifically troubleshooting virtual machines, Oracle Linux, and Windows Server operating systems.
• Will often work under demanding deadlines, operating independently to resolve complex problems.
• Install, maintain, and administer the Windows Server Active Directory Services infrastructure.
• Maintain on our CRM (Salesforce related) accounts.
• Perform platform support which includes monitoring, performance tuning, capacity planning, and maintaining overall service and platform health to maximize system uptime.
• Maintain and administer DHCP, DNS, IIS, sFTP, and other network services.
• Act as a member of an integrated operations team through the management and support of an infrastructure cloud environment.
• Act as liaison between infrastructure and Enterprise Architecture.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design scalable, reliable, and secure cloud-based architectures
• Administer server hardware and software inventories and documentation.
• Participate in database designs and implementation.
• Ensure security procedures are implemented and enforced.
• Manage Microsoft server security configuration and patching.
• Assist in provisioning and administering user access credentials and folder permissions.
• Support web portals, middleware, infrastructure applications, APIs, network, and monitoring needs.
• Facilitate deployment of application code enhancements to environments.
• Present ongoing recommendations for operational improvements of applications.
• Provide support for the restoration of services that includes investigation of outage cause and business impact.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve daily system backup process failures.
• Respond to server resource monitoring alerts.
• Monitor and work on customer support tickets and requests.
• Serve as an on-call support person as part of a rotation within an application support team. On-call response duties will cover regular business hours, nights, and weekends on a scheduled basis.
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Senior Systems Administrator Qualifications include:
• BS/BA degree in computer science, engineering, equivalent experience, or relevant certifications.
• 5-10 years of server configuration management, administration, and production support experience.
• Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
• Architecture and hands-on technical experience with VMware's vSphere Platform, VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM), vCloud Director, VMware Migration tools/techniques.
• Knowledge of Morpheus VM Essentials.
• Detailed knowledge of Oracle Linux and Windows Server operating systems
• Basic understanding of migrating existing applications and services to cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, OCI, Google Cloud).
• Install, configure, and maintain CI/CD tools such as Jenkins and GitLab to automate deployment processes.
• Knowledge of managing containerization using Docker, including image creation, orchestration, and deployment.
• Knowledge of implementation and managing analytics tools like Looker to support data visualization and reporting needs.
• Intermediate proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation and integration tasks as well as working knowledge of SQL scripting
• Working knowledge of SQL scripting.
• Experience with networking and security principles
• Experience working and managing relationships with cloud/service providers
• Experience working within an ITIL framework
• Experience within Microsoft Active Directory Services
• Relevant Linux certifications are a plus
• Production experience with VMware-focused server virtualization.
• Knowledge and understanding of NAS and SAN concepts and connectivity.
• Knowledge of domain/forest management structure and basic switching/routing concepts.
• Applied experience handling performance monitoring and tuning.
• Basic to intermediate shell scripting knowledge and skills.
• Demonstrate the ability to:
o Comprehend and plan systems architecture and design.
o Gather, interpret, document, and evaluate server requirements.
o Conduct incident triage research into server and application issues, as required.
o Read, analyze, and interpret technical documentation.
o Present technical ideas, problems, and solutions to non-technical business partners.
o Prioritize, plan, organize and manage multiple tasks efficiently
o Follow instructions, work independently, or function in a team as needed
• Possess excellent verbal and written communication, analytical and problem-solving, and customer service skills.
• Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate and persuade at all management levels, and thrive in a cross-functional, evolving business and technical environment.
