Job description

Associate General Counsel Senior – Litigation and Business Counseling

Location: This role requires associates to be in-office 3 days per week, fostering collaboration and connectivity, while providing flexibility to support productivity and work-life balance. This approach combines structured office engagement with the autonomy of virtual work, promoting a dynamic and adaptable workplace. Alternate locations may be considered if candidates reside within a commuting distance from an office

The Associate General Counsel Senior – Litigation and Business Counseling is responsible for managing defensive and, where appropriate, affirmative litigation for health plans and provides business counseling support for Payment Integrity matters. Responsibilities include fact investigation, legal research, litigation strategy, risk assessment, and partnering with business stakeholders and outside counsel to manage complex matters.


The role provides litigation support across behavioral health, pharmacy benefit management, specialty pharmacy, benefits management, Audit, Special Investigations Unit, and Recovery. Working independently and as a strategic partner to senior leaders, this position advises executives and management on highly complex, high-risk matters with broad organizational impact and helps drive strategic business outcomes.


How you will make an impact:

  • Carries out research of legal principles and precedents and consults with outside counsel on legal strategies on particular issues.

  • Uses professional legal theories and best practices to contribute to development of company's concepts and principles and to achieve enterprise objectives in an original and highly effective way. This position is regarded as an expert in its area of expertise due to the combination of advanced legal and business knowledge.

  • Provides general and detailed instructions for more junior members of the department and concise, timely briefings to senior level business and legal management.

  • Confers with other senior leaders including ELT members.

  • Works on extremely complex and multifaceted problems in which analysis of solutions and/or facts require an evaluation of intangible variables.

  • Develops methods, approaches and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

  • Provides ad hoc work direction and supervision to other legal staff regarding support on active cases, though such leadership is subordinate to the main technical focus of this role.

  • Assesses and mitigates risk on even the most difficult and challenging issues.

  • Manages high-level organizational risks.


Minimum Requirements:

Requires a JD, current license to practice law and minimum of 15 years of specific industry and/or technical legal experience post licensure including experience in managing outside counsel; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.


Preferred Skills, Capabilities and Experiences:

  • Experience managing litigation and investigations is strongly preferred.

  • Experience managing outside counsel is strongly preferred.

  • Extensive knowledge of health law issues and the health industry preferred.

  • Experience working with senior business leaders preferred.

  • Experience interacting and working collaboratively with opposing counsel preferred.

  • Experience working on and providing guidance on large enterprise projects preferred.

  • Experience collaborating with law enforcement and regulatory agencies preferred.


For candidates working in person or virtually in the below locations, the salary* range for this specific position is $191,520 to $330,372.
