What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Programmer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript, version control systems such as Git, and basic software development tools is typically expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and attention to detail are important soft skills that help you collaborate effectively and adapt to new challenges. These skills and qualities are vital for producing reliable code, integrating smoothly with development teams, and growing within the fast-evolving tech industry.

What are some typical challenges that junior programmers face when starting their first role, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Programmers often encounter challenges such as understanding complex codebases, adapting to team workflows, and balancing learning new technologies with meeting project deadlines. To overcome these, it's helpful to ask questions early and often, seek mentorship from more experienced colleagues, and make use of documentation and online resources. Participating in code reviews and collaborating with other team members also accelerates learning and integration into the team. Embracing a growth mindset and being proactive about continuous learning can make the transition smoother and more rewarding.

What is a junior programmer?

Junior programmers are entry-level software developers who assist in writing, testing, and maintaining code under the supervision of more experienced programmers. They typically have foundational knowledge of programming languages and software development concepts, but are still building their technical skills and gaining professional experience. Junior programmers often work on smaller tasks or parts of larger projects, helping teams deliver software solutions while learning industry best practices.

Role Overview

As a Junior Engineer (EIT), you'll play an important role in supporting the performance and reliability of Enfinite's generation portfolio. Working alongside experienced team members, you'll gain hands-on exposure to regulatory compliance, electricity markets, operational performance, and asset data management while building the technical and business knowledge needed to grow your engineering career.

This role is ideal for a recent engineering graduate who enjoys working with data, improving processes, solving operational challenges, and collaborating with others. You'll work closely with Operations, Markets, Compliance & Assurance, Asset Management, and Finance to support business-critical reporting, analyze operational performance, and help ensure our assets operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory requirements.

As you develop in the role, you'll have opportunities to take on increasingly complex responsibilities while working toward your professional engineering designation.

Core Responsibilities

  • Support the preparation, validation, and submission of regulatory and operational reporting for internal stakeholders, market operators, and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain compliance records, permits, licenses, and reporting schedules, ensuring documentation is accurate, organized, and audit-ready.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on operational and market data across Enfinite’s assets, supporting dashboards, performance reporting, and decision-making.
  • Monitor key performance indicators, identify trends or anomalies, and assist with investigations into operational or market performance.
  • Support audits, inspections, and compliance reviews, including tracking findings, corrective actions, and follow-up activities.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining reporting tools, templates, operational procedures, and standardized documentation.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to gather information, document processes, and support improvements in reporting accuracy and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in site visits to build operational understanding and support field-based activities.
  • Contribute to special projects, analyses, and other engineering-related initiatives as required.
  • Support Enfinite’s safety culture by following procedures, participating in site activities, and promoting safe work practices.

Travel:

  • Occasional travel to Enfinite operational sites will be required for facility visits, audits, inspections, and project support.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with the applicable provincial engineering association.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize information, work with data, and communicate technical information clearly through documentation and reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Interest in developing processes, improving systems, and learning how operational decisions are supported through data.
  • Co-op, internship, or engineering experience in power generation, utilities, renewable energy, industrial operations, or a related industry is considered an asset.
  • Exposure to regulatory compliance, operational reporting, asset management, or maintenance planning is considered an asset.
  • Experience with SQL, Databricks, Power BI, SCADA, or similar data management and analytics tools is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with power generation technologies, including battery energy storage systems, renewable energy, or conventional generation assets is considered an asset.

Additional Requirements and Information

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license.
  • Ability to travel to operational sites throughout Alberta and other project locations as required.
  • Ability to work in both office and field environments.
  • Commitment to obtaining professional engineering designation (P.Eng.) through the EIT program.
