Overview of Position

TEC Systems Group is seeking a Junior Sales and Solutions Engineer to join our team in Wichita, KS. This role is ideal for someone who is willing to grow their knowledge of control systems with preliminary design work and strive to understand complete projectโ€™s in their entirety. This role has is not a repetitive task role. The candidate will work with all facets of our company and also have customer and site interactions.

The Junior Sales and Solutions Engineer supports the automation scope development, initial system design, proposal and quoting process from start to finish. This role works closely with Sr Sales engineering staff, Project Engineering, and Project Management to develop accurate, timely, and well-organized customer proposals. We are looking for someone who wants to help with automation design architecture who is coachable, dependable, and takes pride in producing high-quality work. This position allows for the highest level of project diversity and exposure to industry for a early engineering role. A major role to develop within this position is the abilities to consult with customers and advise the solution for their unique application.

Our projects involve complex pricing structures and coordination with multiple distributors and manufacturers to help create a complete engineered solution. While we provide training and mentorship, we need someone who is thorough, resourceful in researching parts and pricing, and committed to producing accurate, professional work.

Responsibilities
  • Learn and grow understanding of TECโ€™s automation solutions, processes, and customers over time
  • Assist with scope of work descriptions, schedules, and basic project assumptions
  • Research parts, components, and pricing through distributors and manufacturer programs
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates, quotes, and proposal documentation for customer projects
  • Support the proposal process from initial request through final submission
  • Collaborate with Sales, Engineering, and Project Management to understand project scope and requirements
  • Assist in joint calls for on site scope development
  • Develop preliminary bills of materials and labor estimates
  • Ensure proposals and quotes comply with company standards and approval processes
  • Track proposal progress, deadlines, and required inputs to ensure timely delivery
  • Maintain and use proposal templates, estimating tools, and design standards
  • Communicate clearly with internal team members to resolve questions or missing information
  • Build and maintain estimating worksheets that support accurate, repeatable quotes
Research & Attention to Detail
  • Parts research: Identifying correct components, verifying specifications, and confirming availability through distributors and manufacturer catalogs.
  • Pricing accuracy: Navigating discount structures, distributor options, and manufacturer programs to build accurate and competitive quotes.
  • Worksheet development: Building clear, well-organized estimating worksheets that can be reviewed and reused.
  • Proposal quality: Producing professional, customer-facing documents that reflect well on TEC and clearly communicate scope, pricing, and assumptions.
  • Verification: Double-checking quantities, part numbers, and pricing before finalizing quotes.
Skills / Qualifications
  • Comfortable working with numbers, spreadsheets, and technical documentation
  • Organized and able to manage multiple estimates or proposals at once
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Resourceful in researching parts, pricing, and product information
  • Experience as an estimator, junior estimator, or quoting specialist in an electrical contractor, automation, controls, or technical services environment
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and openness to feedback
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and ask questions when needed
Preferred But Not Required
  • Willing to learn automation systems and take an early role in the design process
  • Familiarity in reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and electrical schematics
  • Associateโ€™s or Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
  • Exposure to industrial automation, controls, or electrical systems (PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, instrumentation)
  • Experience working with BOMs, takeoffs, or labor estimating
  • Familiarity with electrical distribution channels or manufacturer pricing programs
