Job Introduction:

If you want your code to matter the moment a customer asks for a quote, this is that role. Our team builds and runs the backend services behind personal lines underwriting and pricing - the APIs and rules engines that evaluates a  customer's information and turns it into a risk decision (Accept, Reject, or Pause). You'll work in Java and Spring Boot on event-driven microservices, own your services end to end from design through production support, and help modernize a platform that's actively moving from monoliths to microservices. You'll also have room to grow - mentoring teammates, shaping technical direction, and using modern AI-assisted development tooling to work more effectively.

The USRM Auto Product Tech organization is looking to fill a Backend Software Engineer role. Candidate will be at the forefront of API development, focusing on designing, implementing, and modifying RESTful and event-driven APIs that integrate seamlessly with our platform components. Leveraging your technical expertise, you will tackle complex technical challenges and deliver robust solutions that meet the diverse needs of our stakeholders. 

In this position, you will be part of a mature Agile development team responsible for analyzing requirements, developing high-quality APIs, and ensuring that they adhere to best practices in API design and security. You will have the opportunity to participate in the entire software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and design through testing, deployment, and ongoing support. Your role will also include mentoring junior team members, share your knowledge and best practices, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the team. 

About the job:

  • Design, build, and support event-driven microservices in Java and Spring Boot, including REST API design, versioning, and contract management.
  • Contribute to a large, versioned business rules library, extending underwriting and rating logic while preserving backward compatibility for existing consumers.
  • Own service quality end to end: unit and integration testing to team coverage gates, static analysis, code review, and production monitoring and incident response.
  • Partner with product owners and pricing and underwriting domain experts to translate business requirements into technical designs.
  • Develops efficient, maintainable, defect-free source code that meets business requirements and team standards.
  • Collaborates on development of unit test cases.
  • Develops test scripts. 
  • Contributes to researching technical alternatives.
  • Conducts impact analysis.
  • Develops component design.
  • Participates in the production of support documentation.
  • Interact with customers and development team to gather and define requirements.
  • Works within project team on iterative development that delivers a high quality product.
  • Participates in medium-level design activities by analyzing requirements and high level designs.
  • Provides functional/system integration testing support.
  • Performs Quality Assurance coding review; defects or discrepancies in requirements identified and resolved with appropriate partners. 
  • Collaborates on troubleshooting production issues and performing root cause analysis.
  • Identify improvement opportunities. (Performance tuning, improvement, balancing, usability, automation.
  • Completes other project work or tasks assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor`s or Master`s degree in technical discipline or equivalent experience, technical degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3+ years of Backend Engineering experience.
  • Experience working in an agile environment utilizing Scrum, Kanban or XP.
  • Demonstrated success in platform modernization initiatives, utilizing technologies such as REST; micro services; cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud; and Java, NodeJS and Spring Boot.
  • An ability to code in multiple languages, including an object-oriented language, preferably Java/J2EE.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills-and a knack for explaining your decision-making process to non-engineers.
  • A collaborative, adaptable working style, demonstrated initiative and the ability to prioritize your time and efforts.
  • A thorough grasp of technology concepts, business operations, design and development tools, system architecture and technical standards.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD and DevOps tools.

Preferred Skills:

  • Event-driven architecture experience (Kafka or similar pub/sub patterns).
  • Cloud platform experience (AWS or Azure).
  • Observability and monitoring tooling (DataDog, Splunk).
  • Insurance, fintech, or other regulated-domain experience.
  • Rules engines or domain-specific languages.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tooling such as GitHub Copilot.
  • Contract testing (Pact) or other advanced QA practices.
