How much do junior attorney jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for junior attorney in Kansas is $47,473.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $36,100.00 and $50,800.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a junior attorney?

Junior attorneys are entry-level lawyers who have recently graduated from law school and passed the bar exam. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced attorneys, assisting with legal research, drafting documents, and supporting case preparation. Junior attorneys gain practical experience while developing their legal skills and understanding of various practice areas. Their responsibilities may vary depending on the size of the law firm or organization they work for.

What types of cases or matters does a junior attorney typically handle, and how much client interaction can I expect in this role?

As a Junior Attorney, you’ll often work on research, drafting legal documents, and supporting more senior attorneys on a variety of cases, which may include litigation, transactional matters, or regulatory compliance depending on the practice area. Client interaction is usually limited at first, focusing on behind-the-scenes tasks, but as you gain experience and demonstrate reliability, you may gradually take on more client-facing responsibilities such as attending meetings or depositions. This progression provides valuable exposure to different aspects of legal work while building foundational skills and professional confidence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, strong legal research and writing skills, and a license to practice law. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, as well as case management software, is typically required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for building client relationships and collaborating with colleagues. These skills ensure the delivery of accurate legal advice, efficient case management, and successful teamwork in a legal environment.

What is the difference between Junior Attorney vs Paralegal?

Both roles work closely in legal settings, but Junior Attorneys have more responsibilities and legal authority.
