Start Date: As soon as possible
Status: Full Time, Exempt
Location: The position is based in Washington, DC (hybrid - 3 days/week in the office)
About J Street
J Street organizes pro-Israel, pro-peace, pro-democracy Americans to promote US policies that align with Jewish and democratic values, that help secure the State of Israel as a just, democratic homeland for the Jewish people, and that advance freedom, safety and self-determination for the Palestinian people.
J Street focuses its work in three main areas: advocating and demonstrating support for pro-Israel, pro-peace, pro-democracy policies in Congress, the media, and the Jewish community; endorsing and supporting federal candidates who share J Street's agenda; and educating the public and raising awareness of the need for a lasting peace that ensures security, dignity, and self-determination for Israelis and Palestinians.
Our Core Values
Everything we do is grounded in three values that guide how we work and show up for our mission:
  • Impactful - We act with intention and measure success by the progress we make and the change we help bring about.
  • Adaptable - We treat every challenge as an invitation to think creatively and find a better path forward.
  • Aligned - We are united by shared principles and an unwavering commitment to our mission.

The Opportunity
J Street is seeking a detail-oriented and mission-driven Junior Accountant to join its Finance & Accounting team. This is an exciting opportunity for an emerging accounting professional to build hands-on experience within a dynamic and politically engaged nonprofit environment.
Reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance & Accounting and supporting the Accounting Manager, the Junior Accountant will play a meaningful role in the day-to-day accounting operations of both J Street entities, contributing to the integrity and accuracy of the organization's financial records, compliance with US GAAP, and the timely production of financial reporting.
What You'll Do
The Junior Accountant supports the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization, helping to ensure accurate financial records, regulatory compliance, and the timely processing and reporting of financial transactions.
General Accounting
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes, including account reconciliations and variance analysis.
  • Investigate and resolve account discrepancies to ensure accurate financial records.

Financial Reporting & Compliance
  • Assist with the preparation of financial statements and ensure compliance with US GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Support annual audits, regulatory filings, and the preparation of schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain accounting policies, corporate records, and other audit-ready financial documentation.

Accounts Payable, Receivable & Systems
  • Process vendor invoices, employee expense reports, and contribution and grant receivables.
  • Support accounts payable workflows, bank reconciliations, and payment processing using Sage Intacct.
  • Help improve accounting processes, internal controls, and recordkeeping practices.

Administrative Support & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Assist with organizational registrations, tax-exemption documentation, and compliance-related filings.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax preparers, legal counsel, and government agencies as needed.
  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis and reporting and collaborate with staff across departments on budgeting and financial matters.
  • Perform other accounting and administrative duties as assigned in support of departmental and organizational goals.

What You Bring
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field; an Associate's degree in Accounting combined with demonstrated professional experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum 2 years of professional accounting experience, including direct work with general ledger maintenance, journal entry preparation, and account reconciliation.
  • Working knowledge of US GAAP; familiarity with ASC 958 (nonprofit accounting) and revenue recognition standards (ASC 958-605 / ASC 606) is a meaningful asset.
  • Proficiency in accounting software; working knowledge of cloud-based ERP platforms is expected.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • High level of integrity and discretion in handling sensitive financial information.

Preferred:
  • Experience with Sage Intacct; candidates familiar with this platform will have a distinct advantage.
  • Experience in a nonprofit accounting environment, including fund accounting, grant management, and restricted/unrestricted net asset tracking.
  • Familiarity with multi-entity accounting structures and inter-entity allocations.
  • Exposure to accounts payable automation or payment platforms (e.g., MineralTree or similar).
  • Experience supporting audit preparation and working with external auditors.
  • CPA track or active progress toward CPA licensure is a plus.
  • We are seeking a collaborative, mission-driven candidate who is committed to strong nonprofit stewardship and comfortable working within J Street's pro-Israel, pro-peace, pro-democracy framework and the broader political and Jewish communal context in which the organization operates.
