What is a job coach?

A Job Coach is a professional who assists individuals in finding, obtaining, and maintaining employment. They work with clients to develop job-related skills, such as resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace behavior. Job Coaches often provide support to people with disabilities or other barriers to employment, helping them navigate the job market and succeed in their roles. Their goal is to empower clients to achieve sustainable, long-term employment and independence.

What do job coaches do?

A job coach helps disabled people build job skills and find employment. As a job coach, your duties include training the employee to be successful and independent and talking to the employer about accommodations they must make in the workplace. Whether your client is physically or mentally disabled, you must help them develop skills that work around their limitations. You need at least a bachelor’s degree to become a job coach.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a job coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Job Coach, you need a background in career counseling, vocational training, or human services, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with assessment tools, job search platforms, and case management systems is important for tracking progress and matching clients to opportunities. Outstanding interpersonal skills, patience, and motivational abilities help build trust and encourage client growth. These competencies are crucial for empowering clients to achieve employment goals and succeed in diverse workplace environments.

How does a job coach typically support clients with varying abilities in the workplace?

A Job Coach works closely with individuals to assess their unique strengths and challenges, then tailors support strategies to help them succeed on the job. This can include on-site training, helping to break down complex tasks, providing constructive feedback, and facilitating communication between the employee and employer. Job Coaches often collaborate with supervisors and coworkers to ensure an inclusive work environment and may gradually reduce their support as the client gains confidence and independence. This approach helps clients build essential work skills while fostering self-advocacy and long-term employment success.

What is the difference between Job Coach vs Career Counselor?

AspectJob CoachCareer Counselor

Career Counselors provide broader career guidance, including assessments and long-term planning. Understanding these differences helps individuals choose the right support for their career journey.

Does a job coach help you find a job?

A job coach assists individuals in finding employment by providing guidance on job search strategies, resume writing, interview preparation, and skill development. Job description

Join Our Team: Coach & Lead Coach
Cornerstone Day Services | Day Support Program
Are you passionate about making a difference? Do you love building connections, sparking creativity, and helping people thrive? Cornerstone Day Services is looking for enthusiastic, people-first Coaches and Lead Coaches to join our growing team and help create a program that participants are genuinely excited to be a part of!
About Cornerstone Day Services
Cornerstone is a mission-driven organization dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to lead fulfilling, confident, and connected lives. Our Day Services program is built around four signature experience environments:
  • Sports Club
  • Tech Lab
  • Creative Outlet / Town Stage

We don't just run programs - we build community.
The Roles
We are hiring for two levels on our team:
Lead Coach
Lead Coaches are culture builders and program owners. You'll take the lead on one of our four signature spaces, designing engaging experiences, mentoring your team, and forging meaningful connections throughout our community.
Coach
Coaches are the heart of our day-to-day experience. You'll work alongside participants and Lead Coaches, actively participating in activities, providing individualized support, and helping bring community experiences to life.
What You'll Do
Participant Experience (Both Roles)
  • Build genuine, positive relationships with participants
  • Encourage choice, independence, and self-advocacy
  • Support participants in developing social, communication, recreational, and daily living skills
  • Celebrate personal growth and individual accomplishments
  • Adapt activities and support to meet each participant's unique needs
  • Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)

Program & Team (Both Roles)
  • Maintain a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment
  • Prepare materials, manage program spaces, and keep things organized
  • Participate in team meetings and ongoing training
  • Complete required daily documentation accurately and on time
  • Report incidents and participant concerns promptly

Leadership & Mentoring (Lead Coach)
  • Take ownership of your assigned program environment
  • Develop monthly activity calendars and keep programming fresh
  • Mentor and model person-centered practices for Coaches
  • Assist in training new team members
  • Communicate participant successes and concerns to leadership
  • Collaborate with the Success Coordinator on participant progress

Community Engagement
Community is at the core of everything we do. Both roles play a vital part in connecting our participants to the world around them:
Lead Coaches take a strategic, outward-facing approach to community engagement:
  • Build and maintain relationships with local businesses and organizations
  • Coordinate community outings, guest speaker visits, demonstrations, and volunteer opportunities
  • Seek out innovative partnerships that expand and enrich participant experiences

Coaches bring community engagement to life on the ground:
  • Facilitate and accompany participants on community outings
  • Support participants in actively participating in community life as a regular part of their day
  • Help participants build real relationships and feel a sense of belonging beyond our walls

Together, Lead Coaches and Coaches ensure that participants aren't just visiting their community - they're truly part of it.
Who We're Looking For
No matter which role fits you best, we want people who are:
  • Positive
  • Creative
  • Patient
  • Dependable
  • Collaborative
  • Adaptable
  • Passionate about helping others succeed

Cornerstone Support Services is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to building an inclusive workplace where every employee and every participant is treated with dignity and respect.
