Job description

Overview

Reporting to the AVP of Intellectual Property and IndustrialEngagement and in support of the mission of the UH Office ofTechnology Transfer and Innovation (OTTI), this position isresponsible for the marketing and licensing of UH's portfolio ofintellectual property (IP) and overseeing the license portfolio andlicensee compliance. Primarily responsible for identifyingpotential licensees and securing license agreements throughmarketing and outreach efforts. Through external stakeholder,market research and engagement of faculty inventors, develops andexecutes marketing plan for UH patents. Works with OTTI staffresponsible for IP management and technology commercialization tocapture value in UH IP. Directs the compliance to ensure efficientworkflow and interactions with the UH research and technologyenterprise.

Responsibilities
  • Engages with industry partners, startups, and investors tobuild relationships to understand their needs and developcommercialization strategies for a portfolio of technologies.
  • Negotiates, drafts, and executes options and licenses withoptimal deal structure with legal support including; leadingnegotiations, providing support to the lead negotiator, andproviding guidance to faculty and staff through negotiations.
  • Structures licensing terms based on valuation, the appropriaterisk factors, and ensure pragmatic milestones are included toencourage licensees to commercialize the technology, ensures reviewof the agreement, collects signatures, and closes out theagreement.
  • Directs the day-to-day operations of the licensing andcompliance group within OTTI to ensure an efficient workflow andresponse with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supervises and mentors licensing staff, evaluate performance andprovides formal and informal guidance; set departmental goals andobjectives, including workforce planning and assess priorities asappropriate in order to achieve objectives.
  • Collaborates with other OTTI Directors and mentors OTTI juniorstaff, evaluates performance and provides formal and informalguidance; assists the AVP in defining departmental goals andobjectives, including workforce planning, and executes OTTIpriorities as appropriate in order to achieve objectives.
  • Balances the needs of a complex set of stakeholders includingfaculty, students, administration, industry partners,entrepreneurs, and investors.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.
Qualifications

MQ: Education: Requires a thorough understanding of boththeoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical orprofessional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than oneprofessional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normallyobtained through a formal, directly- job related 4 year degree froma college or university or an equivalent in-depth specializedtraining program that is directly related to the type of work beingperformed. Preferred: Additional education includes MBA inMarketing or JD degree (with passage of USPTO bar exam) are notrequired but would be a bonus.

Experience: Requires a minimum ofseven (7) years of directly job-related experience. Preferred:Minimum of ten (10) years with at least 2-4 years specializing intechnology licensing and marketing.
