Job description

Job Title: Surgical Technician

Location: Jersey City Medical Center

The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Job Overview:

Assists nursing and surgical staff with direct patient care activities. Assumes responsibility for providing technical assistance in the environment of the operating room. Plans and evaluates care provided.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an OR Technician training program or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of experience

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • Must be a Certified Surgical Technician by the Association of Surgery Technologists, NBSTSA
  • Current BLS Healthcare Provider Certification required with American Heart Association

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Full Time
  • 7:00 am-3:00 pm

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in the delivery of quality patient care through utilization of technical skills.
  • Performs technical duties relating to scrub personnel, including smooth, precise, and efficient reaction to all situations, and assists with departmental work as assigned.
  • Participates in staff, patient and/or family education to a degree consistent with personal knowledge base.
  • Participates in unit PI activities.
  • Applies knowledge of surgical asepsis when arranging and opening sterile packs, instruments, and other sterile supplies; visually checks package integrity and chemical indicators.
  • Assists the Circulator by checking cases, gathering supplies and equipment; ensuring availability and proper functioning.
  • Collaborates with the Operating Room team and performs technical duties in a mature, professional manner.
  • Communicates pertinent information through verbal and written reports (i.e., surgeon requests, changes in surgeon preferences, potential safety hazards, and reports to relief personnel patient care concerns, etc.).
  • Ensures patient safety through preventive measures and implementation of hospital and departmental policy and procedure.
  • Ensures the proper collection, identification and delivery of specimens according to the OR policy and procedure of JCMC.
  • Follows policy and procedure for correct side/site/patient identification Universal Protocol.
  • Knowledgeable in JCMC Policy and Procedure and AORN recommended practice for high-level disinfection and sterilization.
  • Monitors aseptic technique of surgical team and identifies breaks in sterility and corrects them as needed.
  • Participates in the implementation and promotion of new policies and procedures; supports and actively seeks change to improve patient care routines and departmental function; participates in staff meetings and unit based performance improvement.
  • Performs needle, sponge and instrument counts according to hospital policy and procedure (utilizes inventory sheet when appropriate).
  • Performs scrubbing, gloving and draping techniques as set forth in Jersey City Medical Center Policy and Procedure Manual; maintains a clean and orderly work area at all times.
  • Precepts and assists new and existing staff members and students with education and orientation by displaying competency in all surgical specialties.
  • Prepares and assists in the application of sterile surgical dressings, immobilizers and casts as ordered by the surgeon.
  • Reports number and location of drains, implants, grafts, etc., inserted intraoperatively; ensures that the Circulator has all necessary information for documentation on the OR Record.
  • Sets up back table and Mayo stand according to JCMC Policy; hands surgical instruments/supplies to surgical team so that surgical team’s attention remains focused on operative field, and anticipates needs of surgical team throughout procedure, maintaining a clean and orderly work area at all times.
  • Takes initiative to begin room turnover, restocks supplies, and returns equipment to proper storage area following the surgical procedure.
