Position Summary

To oversee the overall maintenance of health care for IWC clients per ICF/MR, federal, state and facilities regulations. The part time RN will help with on call 1 or 2 days a week and every 3rd weekend. Cover on call during staff vacations or sick days.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Serve as a liaison between programs, doctors, and parent/guardian, concerning health needs of clients as needed.
  2. Assist in orientation and training of new staff in the areas of health care issues, roles of the nurse, shift assignments.
  3. Accompany clients to medical, dental, and lab appointments as indicated.
  4. Assist staff in lifting of clients in appropriate situations.
  5. Perform related duties as required or pertaining to shift as designated by supervisor.
  6. Participate in resident admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  7. Give direct care as needed.
  8. Monitor direct care staff for compliance with infection control measures and medication administration.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Perform related assigned nursing tasks, i.e. stocking supplies, ordering, cleaning work area as indicated and complete within an acceptable time frame.
  2. Attend staff meetings.
  3. Drive vans when necessary.

Public Relation Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Promote a positive image of nursing as it relates to working with developmental disabled individuals in residential, school, respite and day program settings.
  2. Promote positive guest relations.
  3. Participate in managing problems and complaints involving health-related issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
  4. Protect the privacy of residents and employees.
  5. Represent the facility and nursing services in professional and community activities as assigned.
  6. Maintain a positive working relationship between nursing staff and other departments.

Education/Training

Current North Carolina Registered Nurse License. Must adhere to all ethical standards as set forth by the Board of Nursing and IWC Code of Ethics. 2 year degree or higher level of Nursing Preferred.

Necessary Special Qualifications

Must maintain valid North Carolina Driver's License

Special Skills/Abilities

Must maintain current CPR and NCI Certification.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to record basic data and document observations, events and medications. Ability to communicate with other staff and members of the community.

Contacts Inside/Outside Organization

  1. Inside: IWC/IWRC staff, employees, and clients.
  2. Outside: Physicians, Families (Parents/Guardians), PEP Program associates, Interdisciplinary Team Members and State ICF/IID surveyors.

Other Qualifications or Requirements

Mental Effort: Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions. Good common sense thinking and ability to function independently.

Visual Effort: Ability to visualize small print, color and utilize vision in reading instruments such as sphygmomanometer, oxygen gauges and inspection of clients during physical assessment.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting up to 40 pounds independently.

Safety: Behavior problems such as aggression of clients and/or lifting could cause bodily injury.

Working Conditions: Employees work primarily indoors in residential facility with some exposure to conditions, which are slightly disagreeable such as toileting and feeding.
