What is IT Strategic Sourcing?

IT Strategic Sourcing is the process of identifying, evaluating, and engaging suppliers of information technology products and services to meet an organization's business goals. It involves long-term planning, negotiation, and management of vendor relationships to ensure value, quality, and cost-effectiveness. IT Strategic Sourcing professionals analyze market trends, manage contracts, and align sourcing strategies with the company’s overall IT and business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT Strategic Sourcing professional?

To thrive as an IT Strategic Sourcing professional, you need a strong understanding of procurement strategies, contract negotiation, supplier management, and IT category knowledge, often supported by a bachelor's degree in business, supply chain, or a related field. Familiarity with procurement software (such as SAP Ariba or Coupa), data analysis tools, and relevant certifications like CPSM or CIPS is highly valued. Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and analytical thinking are critical soft skills for building relationships and driving value. These skills ensure effective sourcing decisions, cost savings, and alignment with organizational IT goals.

What are some common challenges faced by IT Strategic Sourcing professionals, and how can they be addressed?

IT Strategic Sourcing professionals often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing technology requirements, balancing cost with quality, and managing complex vendor relationships. To address these, it's important to stay current with industry trends, foster strong communication with both internal stakeholders and external suppliers, and develop robust evaluation and negotiation skills. Collaborating closely with IT, finance, and legal teams can help ensure alignment on business objectives and mitigate risks throughout the sourcing process.

Job description

Be Here. Be Great. Working for a leader in the insurance industry means opportunity for you. Great American Insurance Group's member companies are subsidiaries of American Financial Group. We combine a "small company" culture where your ideas will be heard with "big company" expertise to help you succeed. With over 30 specialty and property and casualty operations, there are always opportunities here to learn and grow.
At Great American, we value and recognize the benefits derived when people with different backgrounds and experiences work together to achieve business results. Our goal is to create a workplace where all employees feel included, empowered, and enabled to perform at their best.
The Strategic Sourcing Department is hiring a Senior Strategic Sourcing Representative to join our team! As a Senior Strategic Sourcing Representative, you will lead strategic sourcing activities for technology goods and services supporting our P&C IT division.
Your responsibilities will include executing vendor management processes for P&C IT's strategic suppliers, as well as leading and participating in vendor-related engagements such as RFxs, SOWs, market research, proposal and quote evaluations, negotiation, execution, and implementation of contracts. Your goal is to ensure Great American is receiving the best value for their internal partners from suppliers of technology services and that suppliers meet or exceed their contractual obligations in areas of cost, quality, and service levels.
Great American's culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site four days a week, with the flexibility to work one day remotely. Core in-office days are Tuesday-Thursday, with the fourth day determined by business needs.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
  • Lead moderately complex IT sourcing projects, including market research, supplier evaluation, and price analysis.
  • Develop, issue, and manage RFx processes from submission through evaluation and business decision support.
  • Negotiate IT agreements across cloud, managed services, hardware, and software categories.
  • Guide stakeholders as a business consultant, ensuring effective procurement workflows and informed buying decisions.
  • Facilitate the IT vendor management framework and oversee the full vendor portfolio.
  • Develop, monitor, and communicate vendor performance metrics through scorecards and dashboards.
  • Lead Quarterly Business Reviews and manage vendor and internal satisfaction surveys with follow-up action plans.
  • Align vendor performance measures to business objectives and define contractual performance expectations.
  • Partner with the Supplier Relationship Team on contract oversight, including SLA and OLA tracking and benchmarking.
  • Monitor industry and technology trends, mentor others as needed, and perform additional duties to support IT procurement and vendor strategy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Technology, Business, Operations, Finance, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience negotiating technology services and supporting IT functions, ideally within sourcing, procurement, or legal environments.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with suppliers and internal stakeholders, including the ability to communicate and lead discussions with senior leadership.
  • Proven ability to navigate complex organizational structures, manage projects effectively, and deliver high-quality customer service.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal).
  • Ability to work independently or lead within a team, with strong organizational acumen; experience in securities, insurance, or financial services is a plus.
