What Does an IT Manager Do?

As an IT manager, you oversee the information technology aspects of a company. Your job duties include supervising IT staff, working with product vendors, and managing the maintenance and upgrades of the company's hardware and software systems. Your responsibilities are the management and the security of the company’s IT infrastructure. Depending on your company’s size, you coordinate with the internal software development team or with outside vendors to find cost-effective solutions for the company’s IT needs, based on functionality and scalability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IT Manager, you need a solid background in information technology, project management, and leadership, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in IT or related fields. Familiarity with IT infrastructure, network administration, security protocols, and certifications like CompTIA, PMP, or ITIL are typically essential.
