Job description

Warby Parker is on the lookout for an Optical Surfacing Process Engineer to help expand and optimize our in-house lens surfacing capabilities. In this role, you will combine deep equipment expertise, mechanical data-driven troubleshooting, and project execution to own our surfacing department and drive high-quality lens production.
What You'll Do
  • Own daily operations and performance of the full surfacing workflow, including manual and automatic blocking, tapering, generating, de-blocking, lens cleaning, and hard coating
  • Program and optimize surfacing parameters across various lens materials, designs, and coatings to maximize yield, cosmetics, optical accuracy, and throughput
  • Establish rigorous quality control frameworks and process controls to systematically improve first-time yields and reduce scrap
  • Liaise with OEM equipment providers and internal maintenance teams to optimize machine uptime, schedule preventative maintenance, and resolve complex technical issues
  • Partner with Senior Leadership and FP&A to build business cases, justify capital expenditures, and align engineering projects with financial goals
  • Identify and execute technical projects to optimize cost, quality, and capacity of the surfacing line, including automation, tooling, and equipment upgrades
  • Manage the end-to-end digital workflow by owning the translation of lens design files through the Lab Management System (LMS) to generating machinery using industry standards to ensure flawless data integration and automated equipment execution
  • Translate complex optical engineering concepts into clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for shop-floor operators

Who You Are
  • A hands-on technical leader with a methodical, data-driven approach to root-cause analysis and solving complex manufacturing problems using logic and data
  • An excellent communicator and organizer who can effectively track production metrics, document standard work, and collaborate across technical and financial teams
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, plan, and execute rigorous manufacturing test plans and experiments for new products, yield improvements, and quality enhancements rather than troubleshooting on the fly
  • A strategic thinker who can translate engineering metrics into operational and financial impacts for business stakeholders
  • Able to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and work dynamically in a lab manufacturing environment
  • Backed by 5+ years of professional experience in optical lens surfacing and manufacturing project leadership

Extra Credit
  • Deep experience with advanced surfacing platforms such as the Schneider Modulo Center ONE or Coburn Cobalt systems
  • Hands-on familiarity with freeform lens design software or automated lab management systems like Ocuco, IOT, or SOM
  • Strong background in Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or structured continuous improvement methodologies
