What is an IoT internship?

An IoT (Internet of Things) internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience in the field of IoT. Interns typically work on projects involving smart devices, sensors, data collection, and network connectivity. The internship helps participants gain practical skills in hardware, software, and data analysis related to IoT systems, often under the guidance of experienced professionals. It is a valuable opportunity to learn about real-world applications of IoT technology and can be a stepping stone to a full-time career in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IoT intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IoT Intern, you need a foundational understanding of electronics, programming (often in Python, C/C++), and networking concepts, typically supported by coursework or a degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or related fields. Familiarity with microcontrollers (like Arduino, Raspberry Pi), IoT platforms (such as AWS IoT or Azure IoT), and basic data analysis tools is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective teamwork set exceptional candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for tackling real-world IoT challenges, adapting to evolving technologies, and contributing meaningfully to project teams.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during an IoT internship?

As an IoT intern, you'll often work on hands-on projects such as building and testing sensor networks, developing firmware for embedded devices, or creating dashboards to visualize data from IoT devices. These projects typically involve collaboration with software engineers, hardware teams, and sometimes data analysts, giving you exposure to the entire product development cycle. You'll also likely participate in troubleshooting, documentation, and presenting your findings to the team, which are valuable skills for a future career in IoT.

About the Role:

As an Associate Solutions Engineer (ASE), your journey starts in the Academy phase, focusing on rigorous product training, specializing in our cutting-edge AI, ML, and IoT platform, mastering sales methodology, and developing foundational technical skills. Upon successful completion and graduation from the Academy phase, you are eligible to begin supporting the Commercial sales team on small, transactional deals. Successful performance in this role leads to subsequent progression opportunities to support new segments (Mid-Market, Enterprise) or specialist markets (Public Sector, Franchise, and Networks).

What You'll Do:
  • Participate fully in the Solutions Engineering Academy bootcamp, mastering core product knowledge, sales methodologies, and demonstration techniques.

  • Conduct internal practice demonstrations of the Motive product offering, effectively showcasing our core value proposition, specifically the capabilities driven by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
  • Develop expertise in Motive's integrated platform, spanning IoT hardware (in-vehicle devices, sensors), cloud-based data aggregation, and AI/ML features that automate complex operational workflows.

  • Act as a technical liaison during the training phase between the sales team and various internal organizations, including Product, Engineering, and Customer Success, ensuring seamless information flow.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations and mock proposals that clearly articulate the value and functionality of Motive's solutions.
What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • 0-1 years of professional experience. Internship experience in a pre-sales, technical support, or customer-facing role is a significant plus.
  • A strong desire and ability to quickly learn complex SaaS and hardware solutions, paired with a genuine interest in experimenting with and understanding how AI/ML models and IoT devices operate in real-world environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts in an understandable way.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand customer challenges and propose effective technical solutions.
  • The ability to quickly connect technical solution features to tangible business outcomes and value.
  • A strong desire to learn, grow, and execute in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Interest in the Transportation & Logistics industry is beneficial.
