What is an investment consultant?

Investment consultants are professionals who provide advice and guidance to individuals, businesses, or institutions about how to manage their investments. They help clients develop strategies to meet financial goals, select suitable investment products, and assess risk tolerance. Investment consultants may analyze market trends, create diversified portfolios, and offer ongoing support to optimize returns. Their expertise is especially valuable for making informed decisions in complex or volatile markets.

What does an investment consultant do?

An investment consultant advises clients on how to invest their money. Your clients may be individuals, particularly for money managers, or institutions for other types of consultants. As an advisor, your duties are to perform research and analysis on market trends, create financial forecasts, assess the goals of their clients, and suggest possible investment opportunities that will increase their profits and provide them with financial stability. You must cultivate long-term relationships with your clients and gain their trust so that they feel comfortable taking your advice. You make money by charging fees or earning a commission on investments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an investment consultant?

To excel as an Investment Consultant, you need strong analytical skills, financial knowledge, and typically a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with portfolio management software, financial modeling tools like Excel, and certifications such as CFA or CFP are highly valued. Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to build client trust set top performers apart. These competencies are crucial to delivering sound financial advice, building client relationships, and ensuring successful investment outcomes.

What are common challenges faced by investment consultants when managing multiple client portfolios?

Investment Consultants often juggle several client portfolios simultaneously, which requires strong organizational and time management skills. One common challenge is staying updated with market trends and regulatory changes that may impact different clients' investment strategies. Additionally, balancing individualized client goals with market realities can be complex, especially when clients have varying risk tolerances and financial objectives. Effective communication and regular portfolio reviews are essential to ensure clients feel informed and confident in their investment plans.

Job description

Your Opportunity

At Schwab, youโ€™ll make an impact on your career while helping clients take ownership of their financial futures. In a collaborative, inclusive environment, youโ€™ll build meaningful relationships, grow your skills, and contribute to a clientโ€‘first culture that drives innovation.

As an Investment Consultant (IC) in Schwabโ€™s Branch Network, youโ€™ll take a critical first step on the path toward becoming a Financial Consultant. This role is designed for individuals who are motivated to learn, comfortable taking initiative, and excited to grow through handsโ€‘on experience.

Youโ€™ll develop core consulting skills through proactive client outreach, needsโ€‘based conversations, and solution positioningโ€”while learning alongside experienced Financial Consultants who provide coaching, mentoring, and realโ€‘time feedback. This is a role where curiosity, effort, and coachability matter just as much as prior experience.

  • Apply active listening and thoughtful questioning to align solutions to client goals
  • Build relationship management skills through timely, accurate, clientโ€‘focused support
  • Manage priorities effectively across outreach, followโ€‘up, and administrative work
  • Demonstrate resilience and motivation in achieving individual and team goals
  • Collaborate with Financial Consultants and branch leaders to enhance client experience
  • Take ownership of your learning, results, and professional growth

Why youโ€™re set up for success:

Training and Development

Start with Wealth Management Universityโ€”a fourโ€‘week, live virtual program designed to build your foundation for success.

Afterward, continue your development through handsโ€‘on training and mentorship in your branch, partnering with your manager, peers, and mentors for guidance aligned to your goals.

Career Pathing

The Investment Consultant role provides a strong foundation for growth, with a clear path to a Financial Consultant position for those looking to deepen client relationships, business development skills, and financial expertise.

Schwab also supports a โ€œchoose your own adventureโ€ approachโ€”empowering you to explore leadership, expanded branch roles, or opportunities across service and support teams. Youโ€™ll be supported by leaders who invest in your growth and continuous development over time.

Competitive Compensation

In addition to base pay, this role offers bonus and incentive opportunities tied to performance.

What you have

The expertise you bring:

  • A valid and active FINRA Series 7 license required
  • Obtaining or acquiring FINRA Series 66 (63/65) license and Life & Health Insurance as it will be required during your tenure on the job.
  • Relevant experience in financial services or a similar clientโ€‘facing, sales, or advisory environment preferred

The skills you bring:

  • Motivation

Demonstrate strong ownership, persistence, and drive in achieving goals

Maintain a growthโ€‘oriented mindset, seeking opportunities to learn, improve, and contribute to client and business outcomes

  • Adaptability

Actively seek, receive, and apply feedback to strengthen performance

Adapt to evolving client needs, business priorities, and new information with a flexible, solutionsโ€‘oriented approach

  • Time Management

Effectively prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities, including client outreach, followโ€‘ups, and ongoing development

Stay organized and focused in a fastโ€‘paced environment to meet deadlines and deliver consistent results

  • Influencing Others

Use active listening and thoughtful questioning to understand client needs and identify appropriate solutions

Communicate clearly and persuasively to build trust, align on next steps, and guide client decisions

  • Entrepreneurial Orientation

Take initiative to identify opportunities, expand client relationships, and contribute to business growth

Demonstrate resilience and resourcefulness in pursuing goals and navigating challenges
