What is an investor?

Investors commit their own money or their client’s money into products, property, or financial ventures in order to gain more money in return. As an investor, you may invest in the stock market and purchase stocks, bonds, mutual funds, options, and futures. Real estate investors purchase properties with the intention of selling them for a higher price. Some investors provide capital to entrepreneurs to develop a product or service in exchange for a profit share in the company.

What does an investor do?

An investor is someone who allocates capital—such as money, resources, or time—into assets or ventures with the expectation of generating a financial return or profit. Investors can participate in various markets, including stocks, bonds, real estate, startups, or other businesses. Their main activities typically involve researching opportunities, assessing risks, making investment decisions, and monitoring the performance of their investments over time. Some investors are individuals, while others represent organizations such as venture capital firms, mutual funds, or pension funds.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an investor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Investor, you need strong analytical abilities, financial acumen, and a solid understanding of markets and investment strategies, often backed by a degree in finance, economics, or business. Familiarity with financial modeling tools, investment research platforms, and certifications like CFA or Series 7 is highly valuable. Critical thinking, risk tolerance, and effective decision-making are essential soft skills for evaluating opportunities and managing uncertainties. These skills enable investors to make informed choices, optimize returns, and adapt to ever-changing market conditions.

What are some common challenges investors face when working within a team or investment firm?

One of the main challenges investors encounter in a team environment is aligning investment strategies and risk tolerances among diverse stakeholders. Collaborating with analysts, portfolio managers, and other investors often requires effective communication and consensus-building, especially when market conditions are rapidly changing. Additionally, investors must stay adaptable to shifts in industry focus or firm priorities, which can require ongoing learning and flexibility. Maintaining strong relationships while advocating for one’s own ideas is key to success in this collaborative setting.

What are some investment jobs?

Investment jobs include roles such as financial analyst, portfolio manager, investment banker, and asset manager. These positions typically require strong analytical skills, knowledge of financial markets, and proficiency with tools like Excel or financial modeling software. Certifications like CFA or CFP can enhance job prospects in this field.

About Samsung Next

Samsung Next is an investment and corporate development group that champions bold and ambitious founders, focusing on transformative innovations in AI, intelligent machines, healthtech, consumer services, and frontier technologies. We provide early-stage capital, expertise and access to Samsung to accelerate founder success and bring strategic value to Samsung in the form of insights and collaborations. We deploy a unique strategy, making a large number of investments with rapid and independent decision-making. We are a global organization with offices in Silicon Valley, New York, and Suwon (Korea).

Location

Mountain View, CA

About the Investor Role

The Investor position at Samsung Next is a three-year role that provides individuals with an opportunity to establish and/or expand a career as a venture investor with the backing of Samsung, one of the world’s best consumer technology brands. No prior investing experience is required. Individuals learn the fundamentals of investing over a three-year program. This role is not targeted for seasoned investors.

Investors work directly with experienced Managing Directors to develop and augment their venture investment skills and are given as much responsibility as quickly as they can manage. Investors are exposed to a large quantity of deals. With a high degree of independence, they source deals and bring them to closure, partner with portfolio companies post-investment and gain experience with startups at a variety of stages and in a variety of verticals.

While investors can source deals in any of our focus areas, this role will have a focus on health tech. A professional background and network in healthcare through industry experience, consulting, startups, investing, etc., is key. In addition, a technical background (or demonstrated deep technical understanding) will be useful as our investments can be highly technical.

This is a hybrid position requiring regular in‑office days. Additionally, due to the global nature of our work, weekly and occasional evening and/or early morning meetings are required. Occasional travel will be required as well.

Responsibilities
  • Source investment opportunities by growing, establishing and leveraging relationships with founders and investors in our key focus areas of AI, intelligent machines, healthtech, consumer services, and frontier technologies.
  • Evaluate early‑stage investment opportunities with thorough due diligence on team, product, technology and market.
  • Communicate investment cases effectively from deal discussion through deal closure.
  • Contribute to learnings and insights by developing a sharp and informed point of view communicated through written investment memos, active participation in deal discussion, and delivery of insights to Samsung.
  • Provide a supportive and responsive experience to the founders and builders we work with.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical discipline or experience in a technical role.
  • Highly successful 2+ years of business or technical experience.
  • Adept at developing and leveraging strong professional relationships.
  • Demonstrated passion and intellectual curiosity about technology and startups.
  • Ability to learn, absorb, and develop insights about new technologies.
  • Thrives at playing many positions in an unstructured environment.
  • Displays high EQ and is a team oriented contributor.
  • Demonstrates outstanding analytical and communication skills both written and verbal – able to simplify the complex and provide pointed insights.
  • Available to travel regularly.
Additional Qualifications
  • Strong domain knowledge of an area of focus for Samsung Next (AI, intelligent machines, healthtech, consumer services, and frontier technologies). For this role, healthcare/healthtech sector exposure, domain knowledge, and industry network is particularly helpful.
  • Familiarity with early stage startup landscape and has developed a professional network within startup communities.
Salary

The target base salary for this role is 175k-195k.

Application deadline: Friday, November 8, 2024.
