What is an inventory counter?

Inventory Counters are professionals responsible for counting, recording, and verifying the quantity of stock or products in warehouses, retail stores, or other inventory-holding facilities. They ensure that the physical inventory matches the records maintained by the company, which helps prevent losses and inaccuracies. Inventory Counters may also help identify discrepancies, assist in stock audits, and support inventory management processes. Their role is essential for businesses to maintain accurate inventory data and make informed decisions regarding ordering and sales.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an inventory counter?

To thrive as an Inventory Counter, you need strong attention to detail, basic math skills, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with handheld barcode scanners, inventory management software, and sometimes experience with spreadsheets is typically required. Dependability, accuracy, and the ability to work efficiently within a team or independently are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure inventory is accurately tracked and reported, which is critical for efficient business operations and minimizing losses.

What are some common challenges faced by inventory counters, and how can they be managed effectively?

Inventory Counters often encounter challenges such as working in fast-paced environments, dealing with discrepancies between physical and recorded inventory, and maintaining high accuracy while working under time constraints. Effective communication with team members and supervisors is key to resolving discrepancies quickly. Additionally, staying organized, following established counting procedures, and double-checking work can help minimize errors and ensure inventory counts are accurate.

Job description

Counter Sales Professional The best counter people do not just sell parts. They keep the trade moving.
Full-Time Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM West Palm Beach, FL Tropic Supply, Inc.
This Is Not a Retail Job
At Tropic Supply, the counter is where the trade comes to get answers. HVAC technicians, refrigeration contractors, and mechanical professionals walk through our doors every day expecting speed, accuracy, and someone who actually knows what they are talking about. That is who we are looking for.
We are Florida's largest independent, family-owned HVAC and refrigeration distributor, with 23 locations and more than five decades of serving the professionals who keep this state running. Our Counter Sales Professionals are trusted advisors, not order-takers. If you come from a parts counter, a mechanical trades environment, or any role where contractors and technicians depended on your product knowledge, this is a career move worth making.
What You Will Do
You are the first person a contractor sees when they walk in and the last impression they take with them. Your job is to make both count.
  • Serve the trade with confidence. You help technicians and contractors identify the right part, solve product questions in real time, and move fast without sacrificing accuracy. HVAC and refrigeration product knowledge is a strong advantage, and we will build on what you already know.
  • Manage the counter with precision. You enter sales orders, process transactions, handle returns, credits, and warranty claims, and keep the front-end running cleanly even when volume is high and customers are stacked up.
  • Pull your weight on the floor. This is a hands-on environment. You assist with stocking, inventory counts, and helping customers load product safely. The counter and the warehouse are one operation, and everyone contributes.
  • Build relationships that last. Contractors have options. They come back to us because of people like you. You treat every interaction as an opportunity to earn loyalty, not just close a transaction.

Who We Are Looking For
We will train on our systems and products. We cannot train character, work ethic, or the instinct to do things right. Bring those.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience at a parts counter, supply house, or trades-adjacent environment
  • Familiarity serving HVAC technicians, refrigeration contractors, mechanics, or similar trade professionals
  • Comfort with product lookups, order entry, and fast-paced counter operations
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (preferred)

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Customer service experience in a hands-on, high-volume environment
  • Basic computer proficiency, including data entry, order processing, and point-of-sale or inventory systems
  • Clear, professional, and patient communication under pressure
  • Strong attention to accuracy and the judgment to ask when unsure
  • Self-directed work ethic with no need for constant supervision

Physical Requirements
This is an active, on-your-feet role in a counter and warehouse environment. Candidates must be able to:
  • Stand and move throughout a shift of up to 8.5 hours
  • Lift, carry, and position materials weighing up to 75 lbs unassisted
  • Bend, stoop, reach, and kneel as required by stocking and loading tasks
  • Push and pull loaded hand trucks, carts, or dollies
  • Work in a warehouse environment subject to heat and ambient noise
  • Wear required personal protective equipment where applicable
What Tropic Supply Offers
  • Company-paid employee medical and life insurance
  • Optional dental and vision coverage
  • Voluntary short-term and long-term disability
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off
  • Employee discount programs
  • A stable, family-owned company where tenure is respected and people are treated like they matter
Why Tropic Supply
We have been independently owned for more than 50 years because we take care of the people who make this company run. That means our employees, our customers, and the contractors who depend on us every single day. When you build your career here, you build it on something that is not going anywhere.
If this sounds like the right fit, we want to hear from you. Apply today and take the next step in a career worth building.
