Job description

The Water Resources Department is looking to fill an internship position in the following divisions: Water Use Efficiency Interns are temporary employees who provide support for District staff at varying levels and who receive on-the-job training. Interns are assigned to work on a broad range of projects and assignments in different District units. Interns work side-by-side with District staff to obtain working knowledge and training in the area of assignment related to their field of study.

Placement in this classification is temporary, and permanent employment is not guaranteed. The District may not employ an Intern for more than six (6) months full time (21-30 hours per week), or if working on a part-time schedule (20 hours or less per week), more than 1,000 hours or 125 days in a fiscal year. Subject to these fiscal year time limits, intern work assignments are limited to a maximum of 12 months.

This internship provides hands-on experience supporting the Alameda County Water District's (ACWD) Water Use Efficiency Team. The intern will primarily assist with projects that support the District's efforts to meet its Urban Water Use Objective under California's "Make Conservation a California Way of Life" legislation. The position offers opportunities to contribute to administering water use efficiency programs, outreach, research, data analysis, website administration, and may include presenting information to District staff and the District Board, while gaining experience in water conservation, utility customer service, water usage data analytics, and water policy analysis.

This intern will work in person at ACWD headquarters in Fremont. Learning Opportunities Exposure to water conservation planning and implementation within a public water utility. Experience supporting compliance with California water efficiency legislation and Urban Water Use Objectives.

Development of skills related to customer outreach, public communications, and educational material development. Experience working with large datasets and applying analytical techniques to gain water usage insights. Opportunities to work across multiple Water Resources Department functions and projects.

Examples of Duties Support projects related to implementation of Urban Water Use Objective requirements and water conservation initiatives. Assist with research and categorization of sites and landscape areas within the District's service area as outlined in state legislation. Help execute outreach plans to communicate water conservation requirements and programs to customers and other interested parties.

Develop and update outreach materials, including flyers, brochures, presentations, and website content. Assist with website administration and development of cohesive branding for Water Use Efficiency outreach materials and online resources. Manipulate, track, organize, and analyze large datasets to support program implementation and reporting.

Prepare technical reports, memoranda, presentations, and other communication materials. Collaborate with staff on various Water Resources Department projects and initiatives. Complete assignments using a variety of computer programs and software tools.

Typical Qualifications Interest in water conservation, sustainability, public outreach, and water resources management. Strong analytical and research skills. Ability to work independently and manage assigned projects.

Superior written and oral communication skills. Ability to prepare and disseminate information and outreach materials. Completed coursework in water resources, public administration, landscape design, engineering, environmental studies, public relations, natural sciences, or a related field.
