Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:   The Trauma Registrar is responsible for the collection/abstraction of required state and national trauma data bank elements into the Trauma Registry database on all patients meeting state or national inclusion criteria. The Trauma Registrar maintains the confidentiality of the registry data and provides data as appropriate for research.

EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Required:  One (1) year coding experience OR previous experience working with trauma registry databases OR handling medical information in a healthcare setting;

Required. Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS) or Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR.

If not previously completed, within one (1) year of hire complete: 1. The American Trauma Society’s Trauma Registry Course or equivalent provided by a state trauma program AND 2. The Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine’s Injury Scaling Course

Required completion of all mandatory education as determined by UNC Health Southeastern and department leadership

Preferred: EMT or Paramedic experience; preferred

ADDITIONAL SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

Strong data entry and database management skills to accurately record and maintain trauma patient data. · Proficient in ICD-10 and Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) coding to classify and score injuries. · Have a good understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology for accurate data abstraction and coding. · Troubleshoot coding issues and analyze data for process improvement.
