What is an internship in psychological assessment?

An Internship in Psychological Assessment is a supervised training experience for students or recent graduates in psychology, where they learn to administer, score, and interpret psychological tests. Interns work under the guidance of licensed psychologists to gain practical skills in evaluating cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. These internships are essential for building expertise in assessment procedures and ethical standards, often forming a key part of graduate training or licensure requirements. Interns may work in settings such as hospitals, clinics, schools, or private practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship psychological assessment professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Internship Psychological Assessment role, you generally need foundational knowledge in psychology, strong assessment and observation skills, and enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate program. Familiarity with standardized testing instruments, scoring software, and ethical guidelines such as those from the APA is typically required. Attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate findings clearly help interns stand out in this position. These competencies ensure accurate, ethical assessments and effective collaboration with supervisors and clients.

What types of psychological assessments will I typically conduct or assist with during an internship in psychological assessment?

During a psychological assessment internship, you will often assist with a range of assessments, such as cognitive tests, personality inventories, and behavioral checklists. Common tools include the WAIS, MMPI, and various achievement or neuropsychological batteries, depending on the population served. Interns usually help with test administration, scoring, report writing, and sometimes observe or participate in feedback sessions. This hands-on experience helps build a strong foundation in both the technical and ethical aspects of psychological assessment, while working closely with licensed psychologists and multidisciplinary teams.
