What is an Internship in Healthcare Interoperability?

An Internship in Healthcare Interoperability is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience working with systems and technologies that allow healthcare data to be shared seamlessly between organizations. Interns may assist with integrating electronic health records (EHRs), ensuring compliance with interoperability standards, and supporting projects that improve the flow of health information. This role helps interns develop technical, analytical, and communication skills while learning about healthcare regulations and data exchange protocols. Such internships are valuable for those interested in the intersection of healthcare and information technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Healthcare Interoperability, and why are they important?

To succeed in a Healthcare Interoperability Internship, you need a solid understanding of healthcare data standards (such as HL7, FHIR), basic programming or data analysis skills, and a relevant academic background in health informatics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with interoperability platforms, EHR systems, and tools like APIs or integration engines is often expected. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills are essential for collaborating across technical and clinical teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring seamless data exchange and supporting improved patient care through effective health information systems.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an Internship in Healthcare Interoperability?

As an intern in Healthcare Interoperability, you'll likely assist with projects focused on improving data exchange between different healthcare systems. Common tasks include mapping clinical data to standard formats (like HL7 or FHIR), testing interfaces, analyzing data flow, and documenting interoperability processes. You may also collaborate with IT teams, clinicians, and external vendors to troubleshoot integration issues and support the implementation of new interoperability solutions. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to both technical and regulatory aspects of healthcare IT.

Position Summary

CVS Health is seeking a Clinical Technology Product Owner to drive the delivery of interoperability capabilities that enable secure, bidirectional clinical data exchange between payers and providers.

This role supports a product within the Interoperability program, leveraging FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standards to enable seamless, standards-based data exchange across healthcare systems.

Operating within a modern product model, the Product Owner will translate product strategy into actionable delivery, owning execution across both platform and end-user experiences. This includes:

  • Core interoperability capabilities such as APIs, data services, and platform features
  • Provider-facing workflows that drive adoption and enable real-world use of interoperability solutions

This is a highly cross-functional role at the intersection of platform engineering, clinical workflows, and provider system integration (e.g., EHRs). The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with engineering, clinical stakeholders, and external partners to deliver scalable solutions that improve connectivity, usability, and outcomes across the healthcare ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own and manage the team backlog, translating Product Manager priorities into well-defined user stories with clear acceptance criteria and scalable, testable requirements
  • Manage and align cross-team and system dependencies to ensure smooth, timely delivery while minimizing risk and supporting successful release and adoption
  • Track delivery progress, adoption, and system performance metrics to continuously refine priorities, improve quality, and drive utilization
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for delivery and integration efforts, clearly communicating requirements, progress, risks and business value to internal and external stakeholders
  • Drive strong agile execution practices, fostering accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement within the team
  • Lead delivery of core interoperability capabilities, including APIs, integration services, FHIR-aligned data exchange models, and supporting platform features
  • Partner closely with engineering to support design decisions and technical execution
  • Develop a deep understanding of provider systems and EHR integration patterns, including API consumption, version compatibility, and data exchange constraints, and define internal solutions to address integration gaps and accelerate adoption
  • Collaborate with Product Managers to ensure the backlog aligns with interoperability strategy, supports product OKRs, and reflects realistic sequencing, trade-offs, and delivery feasibility

This role may be hybrid (1-3 days week onsite) in our Aetna office in Hartford, CT; Full-time Remote also considered.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a Product Owner, Product Manager, Business Analyst, or similar role in Agile delivery environments
  • 5+ years of experience delivering API-based, integration-driven, or data platform products
  • 5+ years demonstrating ability to translate complex business and technical requirements into clear, structured, and testable user stories
  • 5+ years of experience partnering closely with engineering teams to deliver end-to-end features and capabilities
  • 3+ years of experience with healthcare interoperability standards, including FHIR-based data exchange or comparable standards (e.g., EDI)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within healthcare payer and/or provider environments
  • Familiarity with provider systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and clinical workflows
  • Experience supporting external integrations, including partner onboarding and enablement
  • Understanding of API design principles, versioning strategies, and common system integration challenges
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated curiosity and learning mindset; proactively partners with business stakeholders to understand strategy, challenges, and goals, and identifies opportunities to deliver impactful solutions
  • Demonstrated relationship management skills, with the ability to quickly build trust and maintain credibility with stakeholders across multiple levels of the organization

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
