Sorority & Fraternity Life (SFL) provides support and resources to the 53 recognized sorority and fraternity organizations at Cornell, which is composed of over 3,000 undergraduate students. SFL supports student leaders and their communities as they cultivate an inclusive, meaningful, innovative, and developmental co-curricular sorority and fraternity experience. With a focus on individual and community health & well-being, through advocacy and innovation, we will collaborate with, empower, and support student leaders. Members will engage in developmental co-curricular experiences to create and foster ethical, inclusive, and meaningful communities.
The Assistant Director for Sorority & Fraternity Life (SFL) serves as a member of the SFL team, contributing to the overall strategic planning, and is the primary Multicultural Greek and Fraternal Council (MGFC) advisor. Our MGFC community is proud to include three individual Alpha chapters and is the birthplace of the first historically Black intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity. The NHPC, NALFO, and NAPA organizations are all represented in our MGFC community. In this role, the Assistant Director advises student leaders in council program planning, community service coordination, recruitment and intake planning, and building relationships with other Cornell community student groups and departments with shared missions.
This role will also serve as a chapter coach supporting a portfolio of approximately 15 university-recognized sororities and fraternities across all three governing councils (IFC, PHC, and MGFC). They will help student leaders through officer training/transition, chapter goal setting, leadership development, risk management education, health and well-being initiatives, and the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This position will collaborate with the overall SFL team to develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs and services for the sorority and fraternity community, as well as, co-plan and oversee small and large-scale events. In addition, this position serves as a rotating Administrator On-Call for the University, managing after-hours crisis-response situations and will actively engage across Campus and Community Engagement (CCE) and Student and Campus Life (SCL), by serving on teams, committees and workgroups, as needed.
Success Factors
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to develop and build strong relationships with various stakeholders, including students, alumni, staff, parents, live-in advisors, community members, and campus partners, creating an atmosphere of partnership within sorority and fraternity life. They will occasionally represent the Director and Associate Director and must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. This role must have strong leadership, coaching, mentoring, and planning skills to forward the strategic initiatives of Sorority & Fraternity Life, which are coaching, communication, and educational training and programs. They will infuse inclusive practices to support an increasingly diverse community.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Student Affairs or related field and 2-3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated experience in sorority and fraternity advising, specifically with culturally based sororities and fraternities, program/event planning, leadership development, alcohol education, and/or hazing prevention, as well as recruitment and intake best practices.
• Ability to engage with stakeholders through discussion, presentation or facilitation.
• Desire to work in a team oriented and collaborative environment and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
• Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
• Ability to serve on-call and respond to crisis situations according to organizational protocol, including evening and weekend work as required.
• Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing.
• Willingness to work irregular and flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Student Affairs or a related field.
• Membership in a collegiate sorority or fraternity.
• Previous experience working with or advising sororities and fraternities.
• Experience working with key stakeholders such as headquarter staff and alumni advisors, as well as other university departments supporting the work of sororities and fraternities.
• An in-depth knowledge of current trends and best practices in higher education regarding sororities and fraternities.
