What is an internship freelance?

An Internship Freelance job combines elements of both internships and freelance work, allowing individuals to gain hands-on experience while working independently on projects. Unlike traditional internships, freelance interns are not tied to a single employer but instead take on short-term assignments from various clients. This setup provides flexibility in schedule and work location, while still offering learning opportunities in a chosen field. It is ideal for students, recent graduates, or career changers looking to build experience and a professional portfolio.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an internship freelance?

In a Freelance Internship, daily tasks often include working on assigned projects, attending virtual check-ins with supervisors or team members, and communicating regularly via email or collaboration tools. Interns are usually responsible for managing their own schedules, meeting deadlines, and keeping track of project milestones. It's common to research industry trends, contribute to brainstorming sessions, and present work for feedback. This role requires a high degree of independence, but you'll also collaborate closely with experienced professionals, allowing you to develop your skills while building real-world experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship freelance?

To excel in a Freelance Internship, candidates should demonstrate strong time management, self-motivation, and relevant field expertise—often supported by ongoing education or coursework. Familiarity with digital collaboration platforms, project management tools, and industry-standard software is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving are key soft skills that help interns stand out when working remotely. Mastering these abilities ensures effective project delivery, successful client interactions, and valuable hands-on experience in a flexible work environment.

Can I get paid for being an internship freelance?

Internship freelance roles can be paid or unpaid depending on the employer and industry standards. Paid internships typically offer compensation based on hours worked or project completion, while unpaid internships may provide experience or academic credit. It is important to clarify payment terms before starting the internship.

About the role

Go Fish Digital is looking for a bright, motivated Email Marketing Strategist to join our team and support email marketing efforts for our clients. This is a great opportunity for someone who is early in their career, hungry to learn, and excited to grow in email marketing, lifecycle strategy, and campaign design.

In this role, you’ll help develop, design, write, and optimize email campaigns that drive engagement, conversions, and customer retention. You don’t need years of experience to be successful here, but you should have strong creative instincts, an interest in strategy, and a willingness to learn quickly. Experience with platforms like Klaviyo, HubSpot, or Mailchimp is a huge plus.

As an Email Strategist, you’ll work closely with internal teams and clients to bring email campaigns to life — from planning and audience segmentation to design, copywriting, testing, and reporting.

What you'll do
  • Support the development and execution of email marketing strategies that drive engagement, sales, and retention for clients.
  • Design and build visually compelling emails that are optimized for both mobile and desktop.
  • Write clear, engaging email copy that aligns with each client’s brand voice and campaign goals.
  • Assist with audience segmentation, automation workflows, personalization, and A/B testing.
  • Monitor email performance metrics, including open rates, click-through rates, conversions, and revenue impact.
  • Help prepare performance reports and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Communicate campaign strategy, creative direction, and performance insights to internal teams and clients.
  • Stay up to date with email marketing trends, platform updates, design best practices, and emerging strategies.
What You Bring
  • 0–2 years of experience in email marketing, digital marketing, lifecycle marketing, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in email strategy, customer journeys, and performance-driven marketing.
  • Strong design instincts and the ability to create polished, on-brand emails.
  • Experience with or interest in email marketing platforms such as Klaviyo or HubSpot. Hands‑on experience is a huge plus.
  • Ability to think strategically about how email can support broader business goals.
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to create concise, compelling email content.
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Canva, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms.
  • Comfort working with data and drawing insights from campaign performance.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through.
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate with both internal teams and clients.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Internship, freelance, coursework, or project experience related to email marketing, digital marketing, design, or copywriting.
  • Experience designing emails or marketing assets for brands, businesses, or personal projects, especially in Canva.
  • Basic understanding of automation workflows, segmentation, personalization, and A/B testing.
  • Knowledge of customer retention, conversion rate optimization, or broader digital marketing strategies.
  • Klaviyo, HubSpot, or other ESP experience and/or certifications are a plus.
  • Familiarity with email deliverability best practices, including spam filters, domain authentication, and list hygiene.
