Overview
Job Purpose
This specialist role requires extensive knowledge of the infrastructure used to support all Data Center hardware; Network, Server & Storage. The primary activities will involve Interfacing with Customers and other technical teams to advise on current Data Center infrastructure design (copper/fibre cabling methodologies & standards) as required. The role will receive a Bill of Materials (Network, Server and Storage hardware), add data Center requirements (cabinetry and cable infrastructure) and once a Network logical design is received from Network Architecture, turn the BOM into a Data Center design using current tools. The design should include cabinet layout, providing front & rear elevations, frame layout/design, Cabling Infrastructure schematics, full list of all materials with specifications to be used, cable/basket and ladder rack routes/types/sizes.
This role will be developed going forward so the expertise can be used to support the Operational aspect of Data Center work, this will include; installation activities, supervisory duties and troubleshooting operational issues with the Data Center Operations team.
Responsibilities
  • Allocate Data Center space/power & infrastructure to meet project demands
  • Work closely with the Facilities team & Data Center Operations to ensure successful deployment, and to make effective use of available space and capacity.
  • Provision of quality documentation to Data Center Operations.
  • Monitor and report monthly on Data Center space/power/cooling & infrastructure capacity
  • Keep abreast of industry best practice and standards to implement as appropriate
  • Working with Procurement, obtain commercial quote from vendors for all Project Works independently listing resource and consumables.
  • Be proficient in the use of existing toolsets as required. Current tool of choice is PatchManager, all design works and IMAC activity will be entered into this tool before the actual activity is undertaken.
  • Raise internal Change Requests for all implementation activities and attend the Change Advisory Board (CAB) as required.
  • Monitor DCE workflow tools on a daily basis
  • Provide reports on weekly/monthly activity to the DCE manager.
  • Provide flexible operational DCO support/cover as require, including weekend working and unsociable hours
  • Be willing to travel and work in other sites/regions as specified by ICE
  • Provide holiday and shortfall cover to DCO as and when applicable
  • Provide escalation/call out cover as specified by DCE manager
  • Desire to learn and progress within the company

Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience of hardware manufacturer installation standards and knowledge of copper and fibre cabling installations and standards, with preference given to the following qualifications;
    • Systimax Design & Engineering ND3321
    • Systimax Data Center Design & Engineering SP8800
    • Systimax Fibre optic Design & Engineering SP4400
    • Certified Data Center Design Professional CDCDP (or equivalent)
    • Corning NPI Membership
  • Good experience of Managing Projects in an IT environment
  • Solid experience of working in Data Center environments and knowledge of local codes, industry standards including: IEEE, BICSI, ASHRAE, NFPA, NEC and EIA/TIA
  • Good knowledge and experience of a variety of hardware suppliers; HP, Dell, Nokia, Ciena, Cisco, Juniper and Arista.
  • Understanding of IP networks
  • Experience of working in an ITIL controlled environment with knowledge of Change Control & Incident Management processes
  • Good experience using Microsoft Office and CRM databases
  • Ability to prioritise effectively
  • Ability to manage 3rd party contract staff/companies working within the DC
  • Proactive and flexible with ability to work either as part of a team or as an individual
  • Effective written and verbal communication at all levels
  • Excellent time management skills
