What is a data center design consultant?

Data Center Design Consultants are professionals who specialize in planning, designing, and optimizing data centers to meet specific business and technical requirements. They assess client needs, recommend efficient layouts, and ensure that the data center infrastructure supports scalability, security, energy efficiency, and regulatory compliance. These consultants often collaborate with architects, engineers, and IT teams to deliver customized solutions that align with industry best practices and future expansion needs.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a data center design consultant?

To thrive as a Data Center Design Consultant, you need expertise in electrical and mechanical engineering, data center infrastructure, and a relevant degree such as in engineering or architecture. Familiarity with industry standards (like TIA-942 and Uptime Institute), CAD/BIM software, and certifications such as CDCP or CDCS are commonly required. Strong project management, problem-solving, and client communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are essential to ensure efficient, scalable, and reliable data center solutions that meet client requirements and industry standards.

What challenges do data center design consultants face during project execution?

Data Center Design Consultants often encounter challenges such as balancing client requirements with technical feasibility, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. They must coordinate with multidisciplinary teams—such as architects, electrical engineers, and IT specialists—to address issues like cooling, power distribution, and scalability. Successfully navigating these complexities requires strong communication and project management skills, as well as staying current with evolving data center technologies and best practices.

What is the difference between Data Center Design Consultant vs Data Center Technician?

AspectData Center Design ConsultantData Center Technician
CredentialsEngineering degrees, certifications like CCNP, CCIE, or data center design certificationsTechnical certifications such as CompTIA Server+, Cisco CCNA, or data center operations training
Work EnvironmentOffice settings, client sites, project planning environmentsData center facilities, server rooms, on-site hardware maintenance
Employer & Industry UsageConsulting firms, large data center operators, IT infrastructure companiesData center operators, IT service providers, enterprise data centers

The main difference is that Data Center Design Consultants focus on planning, designing, and optimizing data center infrastructure, while Data Center Technicians handle the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of data center hardware on-site. Both roles are essential but serve different stages of data center operations.

Job description

SENIOR DATA INFRASTRUCTURE CONSULTANT
Design Consultant | Data Center & Fiber Infrastructure
Remote / Local Preferred
Local Preferred (Remote will be considered based on qualifications
Our client is an established telecommunications engineering consulting firm with decades of experience serving clients across multiple industries. They specialize in designing comprehensive low voltage and telecommunications infrastructure solutions for commercial, mission-critical, and data center facilities throughout Texas and beyond. The company operates with a collaborative, client-focused approach and maintains a strong reputation for delivering high-quality technical solutions on complex projects. Their core mission centers on providing innovative telecommunications design services while fostering a supportive environment that prioritizes professional development and work-life balance.
We are seeking a seasoned Senior Data Infrastructure Consultant to serve as a subject matter expert and design lead on complex, large-scale infrastructure engagements. This is a senior individual contributor role with significant leadership responsibility - you will guide design engineers, drive technical direction, and take critical work off the plates of our top technical managers so they can focus on strategy and growth. This role is ideal for a highly experienced consultant who is comfortable owning complex deliverables from concept through completion, communicating with stakeholders at all levels, and mentoring less senior engineers along the way.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Design & Technical Leadership
  • Serve as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for data center and fiber backbone infrastructure design engagements
  • Lead end-to-end RCDD/design consultant activities including site assessments, schematic design, design development, and construction documentation
  • Take full ownership of complex design deliverables, removing burden from senior leadership and technical managers
  • Produce and review structured cabling drawings, rack elevations, pathway plans, and related technical documentation
  • Ensure all designs meet applicable codes, standards (TIA, BICSI, ANSI), and client requirements
Team Guidance & Mentorship
  • Guide and mentor junior and mid-level design engineers throughout project lifecycle
  • Review and provide constructive feedback on engineer-produced drawings and documentation
  • Establish and enforce best practices for design quality, documentation standards, and project workflows
  • Serve as a technical escalation point for the design team on complex or ambiguous design challenges
Fiber & Data Center Infrastructure
  • Design and specify fiber backbone systems including campus, inter-building, and intra-building fiber networks
  • Lead data center infrastructure design including power distribution, cooling pathways, structured cabling, and cabinet/rack layouts
  • Conduct site surveys and provide gap analyses against best-practice standards
  • Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and architectural disciplines to ensure integrated, code-compliant designs
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Interface directly with clients as a trusted technical advisor and primary design consultant
  • Participate in or lead design review meetings, project kick-offs, and client presentations
  • Translate complex technical concepts clearly for non-technical stakeholders

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in data infrastructure, structured cabling, and/or data center design
  • RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer) certification - required; additional BICSI or CDCDP credentials a strong plus
  • Deep, demonstrated expertise in fiber backbone design (single-mode, multi-mode, campus and enterprise-scale)
  • Extensive data center experience including Tier classification standards, power/cooling pathways, and hot/cold aisle design
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, or equivalent design tools for infrastructure documentation
  • Strong working knowledge of TIA-942, BICSI-002, TIA-568/569, and related standards
  • Proven track record of leading design efforts and mentoring engineering teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting to clients and executives
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with minimal oversight

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in a consulting or A/E/C environment (vs. owner/operator only)
  • Familiarity with hyperscale or colocation data center environments
  • Exposure to structured cabling take-off processes and material estimation
  • Experience with project management tools and documentation platforms (Bluebeam, Procore, etc.)
  • Prior experience in a design lead or principal consultant capacity

PAY & BENEFITS SUMMARY
  • Salary: $160,000 - $200,000 annually, commensurate with experience and certifications
  • Location: Local candidates strongly preferred; remote candidates with the right background will be seriously considered
  • Benefits: Competitive benefits package including health, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO, and professional development support (certification renewals, BICSI memberships, continuing education)
