Job description

Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Curator of Community Engagement to develop public programs that will build upon the vibrant culture of the diverse communities AGCC serves. The Curator of Community Engagement will be an innovative thinker and maker, responsible for developing relationships with the public and implementing robust exhibition-related programs that explore the state of community art. They will be a strategic and collaborative leader who will serve as a confident and passionate advocate for the cultural arts in the Harbor region.
Job Requirements
Excellent interpretive, writing, presentation/public speaking, and communication skills, and the ability to design and implement public programs that engage and educate diverse audiences. The successful candidate will be fluent in best professional practices and highly value public access to the arts. Applicant is a practicing and active member of the arts community. The ideal candidate will assist with fundraising for programs and work collaboratively with the management team at AGCC. Master's degree in art, museum studies, or a related field and 2-3 years professional gallery and/or museum experience required.
Exhibitions:

  • Development and execution of shows, openings and special gallery events, curating, commissioning, contracting with artists and oversight of installations, including budgets
  • Creation and maintenance of gallery documentation and gallery design
  • Extensive knowledge of the contemporary art scene including strong relations with artists, curators and institutions
  • Spark visitors' curiosity by creating meaningful personal experiences for visitors within the five galleries
  • Develop in-gallery programming and work with the Director of Education to engage K-12 visitors
Public Programs:
  • Develop, oversee, build partnerships and implement community engagement programs at AGCC
  • Maintain and invigorate existing partnerships to reach new audiences both directly, through programming efforts, and indirectly, through incorporation of new ideas and learning into relevant curricula
  • Provide leadership and direct instruction for some workshops
  • Filling and administrating Studio Artist program studio spaces according to procedures in their agreement
  • Research and development of grants in conjunction with the Executive Director and Director of Development for the maintenance and expansion of the gallery programs
  • Partner with the Program Manager for scheduling
Interns/Volunteers:
  • Select and oversee interns at Angels Gate Cultural Center
  • Some recruitment/selection/training of program related volunteers and interns
Skills & Requirements
  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and procedures involved in the interpretation of arts for diverse audiences
  • Ability to manage a budget and work within the means of AGCC
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers, donors, professional colleagues, and other members of the community
  • Strong organizational, planning, and teaching skills
  • Must have excellent work habits, including a willingness to work the hours necessary to get the job done.
  • Work in a shared/open space office environment
  • Ability to do some heavy lifting
  • Other job related duties as assigned

This position reports to the Executive Director and is 4 days/32 hours a week. Medical and Dental Benefits included.

Angels Gate Cultural Center is a place of creative discovery, exploration and enlightenment, providing the Southern California community with year-round schedule of gallery exhibitions and community classes. In addition, the Center provides professional work-studio space for 52 artists, including musicians, ceramists, painters, sculptors, writers, photographers, printmakers and jewelers.
