Position Description
The Department of Social Services is seeking temporary, unpaid interns with a minimum of 6 hours/week and a maximum of 24 hours/week. All work hours must be done Monday - Friday during standard business hours.
This internship is an extension of academic instruction and provides the opportunity to turn classroom instruction into practical application in the workplace. The intern will draw upon the knowledge gained through their college coursework in order to perform the principal assignment and/or projects of this internship.
Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Internship Opportunities:
Back to School Internship:
Back to School Program - a joint program with the AACo. Public Schools that provides backpacks and school supplies to more than 4500 low income elementary school students each year. If this intern is beyond the summer, the student has an opportunity to learn more about other projects in the Community Initiatives & Programs Division.
Gain an understanding of how the Back to School Program fits into the overall mission of the department. Learn about and interact with hundreds of community donors. Gain knowledge of the need for families to gain assistance to provide their children with the necessities of school.
Opportunity to participate in community events and media activities. Deliver backpacks and school supplies to several elementary schools.
Volunteer Program Internship:
Interns will learn about project management through working on a series of initiatives. Intern will learn about managing and organizing a project and assist with developing and writing newsletters. Intern will learn about soliciting volunteers in the community.
Internship Duties:
  • Assist with the development and publishing of a newsletter for volunteers.
  • Assist with conducting research and interviewing individuals for newsletter articles.
  • Assist in the design and layout of newsletters as well as recommending the context of newsletters.
  • Assist in soliciting volunteers in the community.

Holiday Sharing Program
The Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services' Holiday Sharing program matches donors to seniors and/or families in need of Thanksgiving & Christmas assistance. Volunteers are needed at the Annapolis location to enter families' wish lists and to answer and make phone calls October through December.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates should be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a related field (ex: Human Services, Public Relations, Marketing, Social Work)
All applicants/students must have a cumulative *GPA of a 3.0+.
**Students are required to upload an official or unofficial transcript to their application to demonstrate their enrollment status and GPA.
Note: For continuous postings, qualified applicants are reviewed and referred to the Department on a monthly basis. Candidates will receive a notification upon referral to the Department.
