Position Title: International Hiring and Generalist

Payroll/Personnel Type: 12 Month

Reports to: Director of Talent

Shift Length: 8 Hour Day

Starting Salary: $75,000

Position Summary:

The International Hiring and Retention Generalist works collaboratively on the Talent and Recruitment Team, reporting to the Director of Talent & Recruitment, with primary responsibility for the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, credentialing, and retention of international teachers. The position builds and maintains relationships with international candidates, visa agencies, school leaders, community partners, and District departments; coordinates the systems and processes necessary to successfully transition international educators from candidate to District employee; and provides ongoing support to promote their successful integration and retention. The position also supports broader Talent and Recruitment initiatives, partnerships, data analysis, hiring events, and other projects as needed, requiring strong organizational skills, cultural responsiveness, discretion, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently and collaboratively.

Essential Functions:


International Hiring, Recruitment, and Selection

  • Coordinates the recruitment and hiring of international teacher candidates, including screening, qualification review, interview coordination, candidate communication, and movement through District hiring processes
  • Manages relationships with multiple visa sponsors and monitors shifting requirements for each in alignment with the U.S. Department of State
  • Organize new hiring information for visa sponsors for J-1 or J-2 international teachers who transfer to the district from other U.S. schools
  • Serves as a primary point of contact for international candidates and collaborates with visa agencies, recruitment partners, hiring managers, school leaders, and District departments to facilitate successful hiring and placement
  • Reviews international teacher qualifications, educational backgrounds, certifications, and required documentation to determine eligibility and support effective placement, onboarding, and retention


Visa Compliance and Credentialing

  • Coordinates with visa sponsors and agencies to support international teachers through the J-1 visa hiring and onboarding process, including required documentation and cultural exchange program activities
  • Maintains accurate and confidential records related to hiring, visa sponsorship, credentialing, onboarding, and J-1 and/or J-2 program requirements for certified teachers
  • Communicates insurance requirements between each visa sponsor, each teacher, and the SLPS Benefits team
  • Supports international teachers in obtaining and maintaining Missouri teaching certificates, credentials, permits, and other employment authorizations and coordinates with internal and external partners to resolve barriers to eligibility
  • Organizes annual issuance of visa-compliant job offers and contract addendums under the specific requirements of each visa sponsor
  • Handles J-1 or J-2 visa renewal processes after the initial three-year Visa period and submits required documentation to the Visa sponsors as designated in the renewal timeline


Onboarding and Transition Support

  • Coordinates pre-arrival and pre-onboarding activities, including required documentation, employment processes, appointments, Social Security, orientation requirements, and communication of next steps
  • Develops and facilitates onboarding and orientation for newly arrived international teachers, including District expectations, workplace practices, school systems, community resources, and available supports
  • Collaborates across Central Office departments, school buildings, and with community organizations to connect international teachers with resources related to housing, transportation, food, medical services, and other transition needs
  • Provides Professional Development to international teachers as needed for core teaching competencies or enculturation supports


Retention and Ongoing Support

  • Provides ongoing support to international teachers to promote successful integration, engagement, and retention and serves as a resource for navigating District processes, workplace expectations, and community resources
  • Builds relationships with international teachers and school leaders to identify concerns, facilitate communication, and connect employees with appropriate District or community supports
  • Identifies trends, barriers, and opportunities affecting international teacher recruitment, onboarding, experience, and retention; recommends improvements to strengthen District practices and supports


Generalist Responsibilities

  • Supports the team in development and implementation of recruitment and selection strategies, hiring events, career fairs, candidate engagement activities, and other HR Talent and Recruitment initiatives
  • Establishes and maintains effective partnerships with colleges and universities, visa agencies, community organizations, certification entities, staffing partners, and other organizations that support District talent needs
  • Maintains systems for tracking recruitment, hiring, onboarding, credentialing, and retention activities; analyzes data; prepares reports; and makes recommendations based on identified trends and needs
  • Develops recruitment materials, project plans, procedures, presentations, training resources, communication materials, and other deliverables to support Talent and Recruitment priorities
  • Supports the operations and strategic priorities of the Talent and Recruitment Team and performs other duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of recruitment, selection, hiring, onboarding, and retention practices, preferably within a K–12 educational environment; knowledge of or ability to learn J-1 visa requirements and Missouri teacher certification requirements
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with individuals from diverse cultural, professional, and linguistic backgrounds and communicate respectfully and effectively across cultures
  • Exceptional organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to manage multiple timelines, documentation requirements, competing priorities, and complex processes with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong oral and written communication, data management, technology, and systems skills, including the ability to maintain accurate records, analyze information, prepare reports, and develop professional materials and presentations
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, anticipate barriers, develop practical solutions, and provide responsive, solutions-oriented support to candidates, employees, school leaders, and internal and external partners
  • Can achieve the functions laid out above with a high degree of autonomy; able to translate vision into action and to prepare high-quality materials and projects without extensive oversight


Experience:


  • Demonstrated track record of achieving ambitious results in any setting (required)
  • Demonstrated track record of being highly reliable and professional (required)
  • Two years of school and/or district work experience with a proven track record of results (preferred)
  • Experience in at least one of the following talent work stream areas: recruitment, selection, or development (preferred)
  • Experience in an urban school setting (preferred)


Education:


  • Bachelor’s Degree (required)
  • Master’s Degree (preferred)
  • Missouri Teaching Certification (preferred)


Physical Requirements:


  • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
  • Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree


Working Conditions and Environment:


  • Work is routinely performed in a typical interior/office environment
  • Very limited or no exposure to physical risk
