Job description

JOB SUMMARY:
The Internal Patient Transporter provides and coordinates with prioritization the delivery system for the Nursing, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory, and Medical Record units using a beeper system and close, detailed communication between other internal transport Associates. Requires social maturity and poise to respond appropriately and communicate courteously and effectively with a wide range of internal personnel and general public. Must exhibit the F.I.R.S.T. values (Friendliness, Innovation, Respect, Service, and Trust).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Responsible for transport of patients, charts, specimens, and miscellaneous items to and from all departments, for clinical and non-clinical areas.
  2. Responsible for keeping all units informed of progress of the transport of patients to and from test sites.
  3. Insures customer satisfaction by using proper introduction of self and identification of purpose of visit, responding to calls in a timely manner and promoting detailed communication between units to decrease lost information.
  4. Exhibiting a strong work ethic and participating in studies for performance improvement.
  5. Is competent in using all transport equipment including beeper, radio, wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, oxygen carts and IV poles.
  6. Accepts supervision and maintains good working relationships within the Diagnostic Services department and throughout the organization.
  7. Accepts and assumes responsibility for job functions performed and is accountable for the results.
  8. Demonstrates skill in problem solving and follows through on assigned functions.
  9. Sets priorities needed to perform job functions effectively.
  10. Responds to patient request for assistance, information and needs in a timely and empathetic manner.
  11. Demonstrates knowledge of proper infection control techniques, universal precautions and utilizes them for every patient.
  12. Demonstrates knowledge of the organizational HIPPA and confidentiality policies and follows the criteria.
  13. Contributes to the efficient operation of the department.
  14. Considers the age of the patient served, applies knowledge of growth and development and age specific techniques through life span with the use of gait belts and other transport equipment in planning and implementing care and safe transfer of patients.
  15. Demonstrates a commitment to patient safety issues by exhibiting appropriate safe methods of transporting the patient that may be attached to IV's, catheters, oxygen, and other miscellaneous equipment.
  16. Uses appropriate safety practices to insure personal safety as well as patient safety is maintained at all times.
  17. Demonstrates ethical/legal behavior and promotes a positive personal image.
  18. Identifies and reports situations that may impact patient/family well being.
  19. Recognizes situations beyond ones knowledge and experience and reports appropriately.
  20. Maintains and keeps a daily patient log on computer.
  21. Cleans and stocks supplies in assigned areas.
  22. Prepares the rooms for patients and assists technologists and nurses as needed.
  23. Collects PI and maintains as requested. Sanitizes wheelchairs and maintains documentation.
  24. Reports changes in patient condition to licensed personnel.
  25. Addresses patients by name when providing care.
  26. Effectively interacts with others in the work environment.
  27. Completes assignments in an organized manner and assists team members as needed.
  28. Demonstrates complete working knowledge of Meditech and utilizes to further assist in patient care.
  29. Demonstrates a commitment to professional accountability and growth to maintain and expand knowledge and skills.
  30. Contributes to the achievement of the mission and philosophy of the organization.
  31. Contributes to the effective operations of the organization by demonstrating dependability in job performance.
  32. Demonstrates a commitment to incorporating the core concepts of patient family centered care into practice (dignity, respect, information sharing, and participation).
  33. Demonstrates a commitment to the development and implementation of shared governance across the Organization.
  34. Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS, HAZARDS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Works in a well lighted, ventilated and air conditioned area. Often exposed to unpleasant odors, sights and sounds. Long periods in a stationary position and moving around the unit are required. Risks; exposure to disease, infection and physical strain, exposure to blood, body fluids and tissue. Must be able to move or position 50+ lbs. independently. Typically works a set schedule with occasional overtime.
CONTACTS WITH OTHERS:
Patients, family members and significant others, physicians and Associates, other healthcare providers, community resource personnel, administrative staff, and hospital support services. Must be able to communicate effectively. Should be pleasant, conscientious, objective, tactful, diplomatic, and responsible.
EQUIPMENT USED/SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
Stretchers, gait belts, wheelchairs, transfer boards, and other types of patient transfer equipment. Must have good body mechanics. Computer skills required. Meditech knowledge preferred.
One to three (1-3) years work experience required. Hospital experience preferred.
